Description
Q: What new product(s) is your company showcasing at IBC 2012 this year?
A: At booth 8.B90 we’ll be unveiling our new Breaking News toolset, which relies on EVS ingest and playout servers for ultimate speed and reliability for newsroom operations. Born out of years of live production workflow expertise, it’s the first and only ingest and playout infrastructure that can be used across production areas including news, sports and entertainment. It offers advanced collaborative production tools for journalists and content management solutions, which easily integrate with any existing production infrastructure.
We’ll also showcase advancements to our XT3 and XS production servers, featuring the industry’s first triple encoding capabilities. The system is the first to simultaneously support the I-Frame codec for high precision live replays, the Long GOP Sony HD XDCam 422 50Mbps codec for high quality reduced bit rate media sharing, and Proxy for augmented connectivity and control of production operations.
Since being deployed successfully across multiple summer sports events, we continue to develop our C-Cast technology, which allows viewers to use connected devices to access additional content including multiple camera angles. New features include the ability to replay clips at varying speeds and to import third-party stats and analysis into a timeline.
We’ll also highlight the enhancements to our OpenCube ingest product including improved MXF JPEG 2000 support for AS02, and IMF formats for production mastering and archive preservation, including comprehensive H.264 proxy generation at ingest.
Q: What are you most excited to see while at IBC 2012?
A: We’ve been providing a news production system for IBC TV News for the past four years, but this year we’re very excited to be hosting a ‘news spot’ on our booth where interviews will be conducted throughout the show. We’re installing a fully integrated news solution for HD ingest, storage, editing and playout to get the channel on air during the show. Our systems will manage the entire HD production of the daily news programs, from the news flashes broadcast on the IBC TV News channel, to web-streaming, mobile content, and video podcasts.
Q: What trends in technology do you see on the horizon?
A: The viewing landscape is changing dramatically thanks to internet-savvy consumers and multi-channel platforms that give them the freedom to view content anytime, anyplace and anywhere. The next generation of viewers isn’t sitting passively in front of their televisions but browsing the Internet and interacting through social media. Broadcasters need to find new ways to engage this generation.
The technology now exists to enable broadcasters to monetize the hours of unused footage they capture by delivering it close to real-time as premium content to second screen devices. Viewers get exclusive access to additional content they can’t get anywhere else and can view clips from any available camera angle. Ads, stats or surveys can be added, enabling interactivity and facilitating cause-and-effect programming.
Broadcasters can develop their own web applications and monetize the service using any business model they choose: subscriptions, tiered services, one-off payments, paid-for apps, merchandising, sponsorship or advertising.
By embracing social media as a means of providing premium content, broadcasters can increase viewer engagement, maximize content and create new revenue streams. We’re on the cusp of a technological evolution that will redefine the way we produce, store and deliver content to enable broadcasters to engage the time-shifting generation through ever more innovative and dynamic content streams.
