The Business Side of Filmmaking - Workshop
Event Details
TIME: 6:00pm - 9:00pm
COST: $69 for BDA members, $89 for non-members
You may consider yourself an artist first and foremost, but if you're a freelance videographer, you're also a businessperson, and you need business skills! This workshop will help you navigate the sea of legal issues, contracts, tax considerations, and other nitty-gritty business details that go along with being a producer, director, or other professional filmmaker.
This workshop provides a comprehensive understanding of common business and legal concerns faced by independent filmmakers. You'll feel more confident when negotiating contracts, hiring contractors, protecting your intellectual property, and handling the other business aspects of your work. And you'll be less likely to make a critical insurance blunder or sign away the rights to your film!
This workshop will cover:
Forming your business, including tax and liability considerations
Insurance must-knows
Employees vs. independent contractors
Writing and understanding contracts
Patents, trademarks, copyright, and other intellectual property issues
Who Should Take This:
Professional filmmakers who use contracts, hire or work as independent contractors, and are familiar with self-employment taxes but realize they'll benefit from a deeper understanding of business considerations. If you're brand-new to videography, start with Digital Video Camera & Lighting Basics.
