Recruitment 2.0 Getting Found in the Online Age
"In this economic climate, having every advantage in your arsenal is essential to landing a new position or career," says Greg Rollett, Social Media Guru. “By using online tools to create and shape your personal brand, you are getting the upper hand against your competition. Also, you are showing employers that you are not only savvy and creative, but also a thought leader and someone they can trust to build relationships that will benefit their organization.
Here are 5 tips to starting your online brand when looking for a job:
- Assess your online presence. Basically Google yourself and see what others would see if they did the same. Take notes of both positive and negative web pages, documents, videos and pictures that pop up.
- Update your online image. Update all of your online profiles to reflect a positive image and have up to date information including contacts, work experiences, personal bio and professional associations.
- Start a blog. Pick a theme in your industry that you are passionate about and start talking about it. Tell the world your ideas and start reading other people's work in your industry. This is great not only for your ideas, but for your continued growth and education.
- Look outside the big job boards. The best jobs are non-advertised and get filled through persistence, luck and word of mouth. Look to sites like LinkedIn, blogs from people inside companies, HR blogs, niche job sites (like ProductionHUB) and company job pages. Your network will ultimately find you a job faster than Monster or Careerbuilder will.
- Reach out. Talk to everyone you can. Tools like Twitter, Facebook and LinkedIn make it easy to strike up conversations that might never happen in the real world. Use that to your advantage and people will start to recognize you in your industry.
The key to your personal brand is communication. The better you communicate, the stronger your brand becomes and the more visible you are to employers looking for top talent to help their organization thrive.
