"Why is it important to tell a good story? Take a look at 24 hour news. Every news station in existence today is fed from the same primary sources, and each reports on the same stories day in and day out. Why then, do we care whether we watch CNN or Fox News? It's because, as someone more clever than me once said, "you don't buy the steak, you buy the sizzle." (You don't buy the news, you buy the spin.) You buy into the story they are telling and the angle they choose to tell the story from. If you wanted facts, you'd read the AP feed, but you watch the news instead, because it's more than facts.
Without a story, you will drown in the sea of noise around you. If you can't differentiate yourself from the thousands of people doing exactly what it is that you do, how can you expect anyone to care?"

"To build a story you have to eat, sleep, breathe and bleed the "Why" of it all. It doesn't matter what you do, the details are always secondary in the mind of the consumer. What people care about is that when you explain your idea to them, they can identify with it. Effective marketing is helping people share your dreams with you. It's answering the "Why" for you, and expressing that in a way others can stand behind.
Apple isn't successful because they make the best computers; they are successful because they've built a network of fanatics that are convinced that if you are going to be creative, if you're going to be cool, then Apple products are the way to go. Every scrap of marketing budget they have goes into supporting this story, every design decision they make ratifies it in the minds of their users.
How do you "build your story?" Start off by finding it. What about your specific project makes you want to get up at 2AM and work on it until dawn? What about your idea keeps forcing you to tell everyone who will listen to you for more than thirty seconds about it? If you stopped working at it today, what do you think the world will have lost as a result? If you can answer those questions, that's your story."
