Make your competition 'green' with envy: save trees by growing your ProductionHUB Profile! Since the site's inception, we have embraced the "green movement" in all aspects of the business. In fact, the entire foundation of our company revolves around using the Internet and its advantages to save time, money and paper. (If you printed our entire production guide, it would stand approximately six feet tall.) We realized many production guides printed were bulky, inconvenient and often outdated. Besides, where do most businesses go to find production crew, services and equipment these days? The Internet.
The Internet and technology alike have made it possible for every company to be eco-friendly. The film industry, one of the largest environmentally-conscious communities to date, educates millions about the importance of "going green." Last year, major film studios diverted a collective 40.2 million pounds, or 63 percent, of their studio sets and other solid waste from landfills. This is part of their ongoing efforts to combat climate change and to reduce their ecological footprint on the world, according to the Solid Waste Task Force, a joint program of the Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA) and the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers (AMPTP). As a result, the studios prevented the emission of 33,797 metric tons of greenhouse gases. That's equivalent to removing 7,315 cars from the road annually.
Ways top studios are becoming more Eco-Friendly:
- FOX Entertainment Group has introduced the FOX Green Guide, an online resource for industry professionals to find Eco-Friendly products and services while providing useful tips to stay energy efficient and environmentally aware. SVP Fox Studios Operations & General Manager Hal H. Haenel explains, "The entertainment industry has the ability to speak to and influence a global audience. By greening our facilities and our productions, we not only reduce our own environmental impact but also take a leadership role in creating a better place to live."
- Walt Disney Studios is applying environmental practices by creating 100% recyclable DVD and Blue-Ray disk packaging. The new Disney label, Disneynature is responsible for encouraging and promoting the importance of caring for the environment.
- Sony Pictures has gone "green" with digital production and distribution. The studio is achieving recognition through recycling efforts and the conservation of natural gases by reducing the release of carbon emissions.
- NBC Universal has committed to two green weeks a year as part of its ongoing environmental initiative "Green is Universal."
- Paramount recently established the "Green Room," where productions can donate and take unused office supplies, reducing waste and cost. Additionally, digital distribution systems for production paperwork and dailies are being implemented to save paper, DVDs, packaging materials and shipping.
- Warner Bros. constructed a new, "green" sound stage for film and television production, following the U.S. Green Building Council's LEED guidelines.
It's not just the big studios recognizing the importance of reducing carbon footprints. Companies like Green on Set were created solely to assist motion picture productions in Detroit and surrounding areas to be "green." These services, available in all stages of production, reduce the amount of stress on the environment and production. Green On Set not only handles Recycling Bins with daily pick up, battery and ink cartridge recycling, and Eco-Friendly Gift Baskets for Talent, but also donates a percentage of yearly profits to a local earth-friendly organization with the intention to educate and better our surrounding environment.
Small ways to increase the "green" in YOUR company:
- Post your films online to save time and money without being wasteful!
- Construct eco-friendly movie sets; re-use production sources and rent supplies and materials to make a small impact for a much bigger cause.
- When printing necessary materials, consider using a "green printer" – many offer sustainable solutions by using a range of treeless and recycled content papers.
- Buy used or rent / recycle costumes and use mineral make up on the set.
- When possible, elect to stay in "Green accommodations." For environmentally friendly places to stay: http://www.travel-quest.co.uk/blue/bd-green.htm
- Scope your area to see if there are any eco-friendly caterers or restaurants.
- Encourage your film offices to stop printing 100+ page production guides every single year and use online resources (like ProductionHUB). Create your own profile today! Tell others to find production resources online as well.
