Sony Talks 2010
Q & A with Bob Ott: Vice President, broadcast and professional audio / video products group, Sony Electronics
Q: What are your hottest products right now? Any interesting trends this past year in regards to your professional products?
A: In just the past 2 months alone, we've seen tremendous growth in our professional camcorder line. Sony has always offered the most complete range of products for any application and budget – from entry-level to mid-market to high-end. But with the recent additions to our XDCAM EX line and the new NXCAM AVCHD-based series as just two examples, our customers now have an even greater range of choices to fulfill their individual needs.
For example, NXCAM represents a significant addition to our product line. The real world of professional and broadcast video production is not “black and white.” People need different solutions that are best for different applications.
We've always said we would wait to introduce AVC-based products until the time was right; when it made sense in terms of our customers' entire workflows, which focus on native AVCHD editing like our Vegas software products. And now we have that, as a great complement to our MPEG-2 technologies.
Q: Tell us why professionals should be on the lookout for XDCAM EX cameras. What other cameras are on the horizon?
A: People need choices in terms of how they can manage their workflow, how their clients want content delivered, or what type of media makes the most sense for their application, Plus, we always try to build in as much legacy compatibility and multi-format flexibility as possible in all our products.
The XDCAM EX series, especially with its new additions, continues to raise the bar in terms of creativity and flexibility for solid-state digital production.
I can't give away too much about our plans for 2010, but it's safe to say that we will continue to offer more surprises for our customers, especially at NAB 2010.
Q: What can we expect from Sony as the industry recovers from the recession?
A: The answer is pretty simple: we're going to keep doing what's worked for us all along: listening to our customers and offering them the widest range of solutions and systems for their diverse workflows and budgets.
