X-Men: First Class
Recap of June 2011 Meeting of LA ACM SIGGRAPH
Moderated by Denise Davis, VFX Producer of the film, this one night only event was a panel discussion on the visual effects employed in the blockbuster Summer hit "X-Men: First Class." Just over one hundred attendees gathered outside The Barnsdall Gallery Theatre for socializing and cocktails before the presentations from VFX teams who worked on the film. The panel consisted of key contributors from Digital Domain, Luma Pictures and Rhythm & Hues. Joining this group for the closing Q & A was VFX Supervisor John Dykstra. Digital Domain presented on the work they did for the Kevin Bacon digital double. The Rhythm & Hues team presented on ray tracing techniques for Emma Frost and the translucent wings on Angel, as well as for the morphs of the Mystique character, and Luma Pictures presented on how they achieved the looks for Darwin's gills and morphs.
LA ACM SIGGRAPH 2011-2012 season will resume in September after the SIGGRAPH 2011 conference being held in Vancouver this year. Locations and topics vary.

Green Production Tip of the Month
Devices like televisions, scanners, and printers use standby power, even when off.
To avoid paying for these "phantom energy drainers", use a power strip to turn all devices off at once. Flipping the switch on your power strip has the same effect as unplugging each socket from the wall.
Studies have found that phantom energy loads account for 5-10% of the total electricity in residential.
