Featured Interview: Q&A with Sony Creative Software
Trends, Tips and product launches from NAB 2012
Q: What trends in technology do you see on the horizon?
A: There is clearly a trend toward large-imager cameras at a wide range of price points, from the affordable DSLRs like Sony's Alpha line, to high-performance, mid-priced cameras like the PMW-F3 and NEX-FS700, to the high-end F65 camcorder. Sony is addressing the needs of the digital cinematographer with a robust selection of Super-35mm cameras, while at the same time offering one of the most comprehensive line-ups of traditional ENG camcorders in the industry.
Q: What tips would you give to upcoming or veteran editors about your products?
A: Vegas Pro 11 has many features that will speed your workflow that may not be apparent at first glance. Break out of the traditional paradigms and look at the fresh new ways VP offers when working with media. Spend some time with the interactive tutorials to get up to speed quickly.

Featured Interview: Q&A with John Manchester of Manchester Music
How music libraries have changed over the years
Q: How has library music itself changed over the years?
A: When I started we featured melodies. Now a lot of stuff is closer to sound design over a groove. It makes sense – melodies can compete with voice-overs and visual effects. But people still need theme music. Our solution is to offer every track with multiple versions, including plenty of spare underscores. And if you're making a long-form production, you can use several versions of the same tune, which gives your piece the coherence of a custom score.
Q: Is it true that some producers are going DIY with their music?
A: It is. And all power to them if they can make tracks they like, and have the time to do it. Thing is, DIY tracks tend to be loop based. And if you're using the same software as everyone else – like Garage Band – your tracks are going to sound like everyone else's.
