PALO ALTO, CA--(Marketwire - Aug 9, 2012) - Y-Combinator backed ReelSurfer announced today that the company is releasing its public beta, available at: http://reelsurfer.com. Founded by Stanford graduates Christian Yang and Neil Joglekar, ReelSurfer lets users clip and share any video from any website. Instead of sharing a long video with minutes of extraneous content, ReelSurfer allows users to clip out the most relevant moments directly in their browser. After creating clips, users have the option to collect clips together into topic specific reels and share them with friends.
"The amount of content online is staggering, as proven by the 72 hours of video uploaded to YouTube every minute," says Yang, describing the incredible growth of online video. "Helping people discover the best of all this content and fitting it into their busy lives is a challenge we look forward to tackling. The response to our private beta has been overwhelming, and we are extremely excited to launch to a larger audience -- especially on mobile."
The company is advised by luminaries at the intersection of technology and entertainment. William Fay, Executive Producer of The Hangover, 300, and Independence Day and advisor to the company, says, "ReelSurfer is going to change the way people interact with online video in a world of decreasing attention spans and increased need for context. I look forward to the ReelSurfer team making video consumption relevant online."
Current ReelSurfer user scenarios include trading movie clips online, sharing wedding vows and first dances, and distributing clips to raise money on Kickstarter. ReelSurfer user Monisha Perkash, CEO of LUMOback, explains, "Video was a major part of our social media strategy and ReelSurfer was the perfect service to allow us to easily cut short viral clips, share them with our community, and most importantly drive traffic."
Joglekar says, "The race is on to create the Instagram for video. But with viewers outnumbering creators 1000 to 1, we feel the huge, immediate opportunity exists on the video consumption side. Our vision and opportunity lies in giving consumers the ability to easily become curators and creators themselves."
ReelSurfer lets anyone clip and share any video from any website. The vision is to build the most valuable content network on the planet -- created by reels of short, relevant videos that are saved, watched and shared with friends.
