This year might just be getting warmed up, but one of the largest gatherings of music and audio professionals is ready to get things going. With tons of exhibitors and scores of workshops, meetings, and award ceremonies, the 2018 NAMM show is bound to have something for everyone under the roof of the Anaheim convention center.
Where Do We Start?
2018 NAMM will be held in beautiful Anaheim California from January 25th-28th at the Anaheim Convention Center. There are three venues as well. Here is how it all breaks out:
Anaheim Convention Center, ACC North Hall & Anaheim Marriott
Hilton Anaheim, Anaheim Convention Center (Lobby C & Arena)
Grand Plaza – Live Music All Day & Nightly Headliners
The show floor itself will be jammed packed with exhibitors and visitors from all over the world. They want to meet you and tell you all about their unique products. Professionals will have the opportunity to get up close and personal with producers, sound engineers, lighting and stage gear heads, and of course all kinds of musical instruments and other manufacturers on the exhibition floor. Let's take a look at some of the major building blocks that will make the 2018 NAMM really special this year. Oh yeah one thing worth noting - you have to plan out your time. There is so much to see and hear that if you don't plan it out you will miss some stuff you really want to get to.
I know if you are like me you want to see everything, but sometimes you have to pick and choose if you want to go for quality not quantity.
But first the new stuff
Let's say it like it is. Most people LOVE new stuff! The folks at NAMM always have new events and things that will are bound to get your attention. It's the new things that make you pause, refresh, or inspire to grow professionally. Check it out:
AES (Audio Engineering Society) has formed an alliance with NAMM for the January show and will present AES @ NAMM: Pro Sound Symposium Live and Studio. Agendas will include technical sessions, expert speaker presentations, hands-on workshops and tutorials, as well as networking events and social opportunities and professional development offerings for music and pro audio professionals.
NAMM has partnered with ESTA (Entertainment Services and Technology Association) to offer event technology professionals a new platform for industry training, business development and networking in lighting, lighting technology, rigging and more.
The Parnelli Awards
Timeless Communications Corp. will relocate The Parnelli Awards to the Anaheim Convention Center as a part of The NAMM Show. The premier award show for the live production community will honor Bobby Thrasher, longtime production manager for Billy Joel and other top artists with the 2018 Parnelli Audio Lifetime Achievement Award; lighting designer Jonathan Smeeton (The Rolling Stones, Marilyn Manson, Jane's Addiction, Taylor Swift), who will be receiving the Parnelli Visionary Award; and pro audio pioneer and DiGiCo technical director John Stadius will be honored with the 2018 Parnelli Audio Innovator Award.
And of course there are always a few crowd favorites:
The 33rd Annual NAMM TEC Awards honoring excellence in sound technology and creativity in worlds of music making, live performances, video games, television and films. Stay tuned to find out who will receive the Les Paul Award and who will be inducted into the NAMM TEC Hall of Fame. Last year, The NAMM TEC Awards honored Aerosmith's Joe Perry and his producer, Jack Douglas.
TEC Tracks sessions will again feature master classes, live interviews and panel discussions on the most relevant topics for recording, live sound, DJ, lighting, music business and entertainment technology professionals.
I told you there was a lot of ground to cover!
Like I said earlier, with tons of exhibitors classes and events, you might be pretty busy, but like a surfer dude friend told me one time, you have to climb up to the top of the wave to get the most out of the wave. Makes sense to me. First things first - I am getting the map located on the NAMM.org website and looking at where I have to get to and where is it on the floor. If you are still with me then you will see that the pro audio and technologies are shaded darker. Doesn't mean you shouldn't see other things just means now you will know where to start if that's your thing. Again, for me it is what are the MUST see, what are the need to see, and what I want to see if I have one ounce of energy left. That's just the exhibit floor! Other parts are sure to follow, but these are a few things that really got my attention.

In his “The Storyteller’s Dilemma” TEC Track master class, Louis will offer his unique insights on how technology is changing the way we share experiences and shaping the industry’s mutable economic bases. This session urges artists, producers, innovators, and consumers to embrace the revolution and strive for an entertaining, informative, and creative future undergirded by new, mutually beneficent programs and business models. By moving away from unviable practices, it’s possible to achieve profits while more equitably compensating all involved parties.
