JVC Professional Introduces HEVC Encoder for Connected CAM Series at NAB 2020

JVC Professional Video, a division of JVCKENWOOD USA Corporation, debuts its new KA-EN200G H.265/HEVC Encoder at this year’s NAB show (Booth C4417). Designed to deliver higher quality, lower bit-rate streaming, the plug-in H.265/HEVC module provides add-on value for the company’s CONNECTED CAM series, which includes the GY-HC900, GY-HC500 and GY-HC550 camcorders.

The JVC module fits into the expansion slot of any model within the CONNECTED CAM line of camcorders for quick and easy HD streaming using the H.265/HEVC codec. Owing to its higher level of efficiency, High-Efficiency Video Compression (HEVC) is an improvement over the widely used H.264/AVC compression standard. This results in higher quality images with reduced bandwidth—up to 50 percent savings—and allows producers to use 10-bit 4:2:2 rather than typical 8-bit 4:2:0 sampling.

“As the video landscape continues to develop, we are looking ahead to the evolution of the HEVC standard,” says Edgar Shane, General Manager, Engineering, JVCKENWOOD USA Corp. “JVC remains ahead of emerging trends and evolving technologies, focusing on smarter engineering solutions for broadcast and streaming professionals. We recognize that HEVC offers many advantages over the H.264/AVC compression standard. By offering this new plug-in module, JVC allows its customers to future-proof the investment they’ve made in JVC’s CONNECTED CAM line.”

CineCina Film Festival donates more than 800 KN95 protective masks to the New York State Department of Health

As New York City and the State of New York work to combat the devastating health crisis caused by COVID-19 with medical personnel facing dwindling supplies of personal protective supplies, CineCina has acquired and donated 810 KN95 protective masks to the New York State Department of Health.

Like many arts organizations that call New York City its home, CineCina (which presents the CinaCina Film Festival and the Project Horizon Film Competition, as well as additional film screenings and events throughout the year), has been forced to postpone and reschedule planned programming as the city’s inhabitants and businesses stay on lockdown. During this time, CinaCina has turned its attention to what it could do to contribute to the fight against virus beyond complying with “stay at home” restrictions to assist in flattening the curve of the people infected with the virus.

LiveU, PlayStation, and FIFA 20 bring e-LIGA MX BBVA soccer esports competition to viewers in Mexico

Amid the COVID-19 global pandemic, sports leagues and teams have been sidelined due to social distancing restrictions. Mexican Soccer League, LIGA MX BBVA has found a way to bring the game to TV and engage with fans in a unique way, creating a virtual tournament with the top soccer players from various regions in Mexico to compete against each other. The live-streamed tournament, sponsored by BBVA and Sony Playstation, will be presented to homes in Mexico via LiveU Matrix IP Content Contribution and Distribution platform. LiveU technology enables viewers to enjoy the game from the safety and comfort of their own homes.

The Production
The Production crew at Magnum Soluciones Digitales will leverage a LiveU LU600 portable transmission unit to stream out the Playstation 4 game feed. TV and cable broadcasters with rights to the game will be able to pick up the live feed via LiveU Matrix and distribute the tournament to viewers at home. LIGA MX will also share the live stream on its Twitch and YouTube channels.

Each FIFA 20 40-minute game will be 1 vs. 1 person twice a day during the tournament. Everyone stays home to play. How do viewers get closer to the action? Each player will be equipped with the LiveU Smart app for their cell phone. The cellular bonding app enables the players to transmit high-quality live video, while maintaining a robust connection, to the LU Central cloud management platform for editing into the final production.

DPP and Signiant Launch Real-Time Research Project into Remote Working in the time of Coronavirus

The DPP, in partnership with Signiant, has launched a four-month longitudinal research project to chart how feelings and behaviors around remote and distributed working develop across the media industry through the course of the Coronavirus pandemic. The research will examine how companies make structural adaptations, as well as recording personal and emotional journeys.

The impact of the Coronavirus pandemic on the media industry - like all industries - is huge and unprecedented. One of the most immediate impacts is the need for almost every company to adopt remote working, using cloud-based tools. When the pandemic eventually ends, will businesses simply return to the way they worked before? Or will working practices have been changed forever?

At the heart of the project is a monthly survey, across a four-month period, of around 20 questions. It will be completed by companies from across the supply chain, and from around the world. These surveys will track how companies are being impacted by the crisis and how they are adapting to new ways of working.

In addition, research analysis is being undertaken regarding the state of the wider media industry, charting key developments over time to provide background context to the work. Halfway through the research, the DPP will hold a virtual version of its DPP At Home event strand, exploring some of the emerging themes and to add some qualitative depth to the quantitative research. A short interim report will be published following this event.

A full report will be published in July 2020.

The Changing ‘State of Live’ During the COVID-19 Crisis

Health and safety is now the number one priority globally with the spread of the COVID-19 virus. Social distancing, lockdowns and quarantines have increased the need for remote reporting, fueling demand for live streaming, mobile apps and live IP video sharing solutions. LiveU is today presenting an interim ‘State of Live’ report showing the trends over the last five weeks as the coronavirus continues to impact the world. This special LiveU report is based on data generated from its global customer base.

Live sessions via the LiveU Central management platform have more than doubled, with the number of users increasing by 30%. The average number of sessions by users has also doubled with TV crews, talk show hosts and other personalities using HEVC bonded field units for round-the-clock reporting and productions from remote locations, including from studios set-up in their own homes. The US saw the greatest increase in session duration, followed by Japan and India.

Mobile apps are in demand more than ever and there’s been a huge growth in the use of LU-Smart bonded transmission technology for smartphones. LiveU has seen a 150% growth in app units and sessions. Mobile journalists and others are covering live news and virtual events from home or other locations using their own mobile devices. The LiveU app is becoming a critical part of the broadcast workflow with TV show hosts transmitting video feeds to the studio via their mobile phone.

IP content distribution is also being deployed across the US for network-to-station and station-to-station sharing as broadcasters use LiveU Matrix for their local loops and pool feeds: shared feeds are up 35% over the same period last month. Governors in several US states are using LiveU Matrix to deliver their daily live briefings directly to stations and networks from remote locations.

I don’t know exactly how to describe it but there is a certain vibe when you put NAB together with New York City and the Javits Convention Center. NAB NY 2023 most certainly lived up to the hype — there were 50 new and different exhibitors along with some familiar favorites that made for an overall total of 275 companies to see and talk to. This made it a really fun and quite busy show that had something for everyone.
