I was lucky enough to serve as the technical advisor on AbelCine’s Behind the Lens project, a web series looking at 11 professional zoom lenses covering the indispensable 3x wide-to-tight range, perfect for handheld shooting in run-and-gun documentary situations. New York-based cinematographer Matt Porwoll graciously agreed to helm Behind the Lens: A Look at Documentary Zooms, which launched in April. We just posted the final episode in the series and wanted to look back and highlight some key findings about each lens.
As we gear up for 2017 NAB, I could not think of a better time to step back and look at the incredible amount of choices (zoom or prime) when it comes to selecting what you deem as the best lens or group of lenses for your next shoot. But there are some really important considerations to think about when lining up your next project. Before we delve into lens heaven and look at some current models, let’s hit pause and look at few thinking points that might make for some good food for thought.
Flash memory is finding increased use in client and enterprise applications because of its higher performance compared to hard disk drives. As the $/GB price of flash memory declines these applications are increasing. For professional media and entertainment projects dealing with higher resolution and higher dynamic range workflows, performance matters. We will look at developments in flash memory in digital media content capture and creation, post production, content distribution and even in archiving.
As I looked out of my office window this morning at the raging snowstorm currently hammering New England, it occurred to me that NAB 2017 is right around the corner! I hope you will have your best walking/running shoes ready because this year's NAB is shaping up to be a real whopper of a show. All preliminary indications tell me that this could be the year of some exciting new breakout products and as always the continued refinement of existing products. Someone who knows me asked, “Are you excited about NAB?” Guess I couldn’t hold back my enthusiasm for one of the greatest technology showcases going when I said “Heck ya!"

So with another IBC in the rearview mirror and NAB NY along with AES just a few days away, you would think we could catch our collective breath. Not going to happen. With more new cameras, new sensors and new gear announcements than I can remember (outside of NAB) there is just a ton of cool stuff going on in our business. Which makes for very good news for us here at ProductionHUB. The problem is where to start? Simple. I am just going to dive right in with both feet. Not in any particular order either but here goes.

As a director of photography, Crudo has shot a wide range of feature, television, and commercial productions. Among his feature credits are Federal Hill, American Buffalo, American Pie, Music From Another Room, Outside Providence, Down To Earth, Out Cold, Grind, Brooklyn Rules and some 26 episodes of the Emmy-award winning Justified. He has also directed several independent features.
