Equipment Review: Canon XA25 Professional HD Camcorder
by Bradford HillThe Canon XA25 Pro HD Camcorder is a compact 1/2" inch CMOS Sensor Camera with a lot of great and unexpected stand-out features. To start, its full auto & manual modes, its two XLR inputs, and an HDSDI slot packaged with the ability to shoot 1920x1080 at 59.94p are notable. While traveling on shoots, I was impressed with the capability to be able to record 1080p at 60fps within a moment’s notice. This frame rate is a new feature to the Canon line of cameras, which gives this camera a competitive edge. It is also easy to manage when set to auto mode, which comes in handy if a novice needs to use the camera on a small crew shoot, or to simply capture any ‘run-and-gun’ footage.

In Review: JVC GY-HM200SP 4K Camcorder Delivers Winning Shots
It is not unusual over the course of the year to get quite a few different professional camera packages to try out. They range from super high end to entry pro level. But that’s ok by me because I am always looking for the right camera for the program, not overkill. That said the JVC GY-HM200SP 4K CAM was really quite a pleasant surprise. But I’m not really sure why I was surprised. I think I might know. Normally, we only get to hang on to a camera for a few weeks at most. This time however we had a chance to stretch that review period out over a longer time which was some of the local high school football season and couldn’t have been happier with the results. Yes, and the team won some of their games too! But before I get to deep into the games lets get a snapshot of the physical make up of JVC GY-HM200SP.

4K Cameras Become the Norm at NAB 2015
by Carl Mrozek This is the 19th consecutive year I’ve attended NAB in quest of the ideal digital video camera, and ideally one that is somewhat affordable. Of course one man’s ideal is another’s disappointment, and likewise with affordable. However, at the largest production media trade show in the world, NAB 2015, there were more than a few cameras that nearly fit my criteria. This included wide dynamic range, a wide range of frame rates, more than one robust recording codec, smart design and of course great imaging.

Desert Island Gear: 7 Pieces of Gear You'll Wish You Had
Remember Tower Records? Tom Hanks' son Colin recently directed a great documentary about that fallen empire, nostalgic to us pre-millennial, pre-hipster music collectors who spent sinful amounts of money on actual stuff that you couldn't just download. They were called "imports"! Tower Records used to give out a free rag called "Pulse!" with a regular column titled Desert Island Discs. They weren't the only ones, but in Pulse!, the D.I.D. page was an institution.

Field Recorder Dailies Workflow to Make Life Simple for the Editor and Sound Mixer
This article describes a comprehensive dailies workflow that can make life simpler for the editor and the sound mixer, while maintaining the highest quality. Why does it matter?
