Damien Chazelle’s feature, First Man, about the United States’ effort to land a man on the moon, took home the Oscar last night for the Outstanding Visual Effects category. Paul Lambert, part of the team who took home the Oscar in the category for Blade Runner: 2049 shared insights into the multitude of VFX techniques to create the film's realism.
Camerawork combines creativity and technology in a way that sometimes makes it hard to be objective about gear. That has never been truer as when discussing lenses, with crews on big-budget dramas poring over reference monitors for hours evaluating waveform, vector scope and histograms. People using full-sized broadcast cameras have almost as many options, though the concerns tend to be more practical and less interpretive. That sort of choice, though, has not always been quite so available to miniature, point-of-view and special purpose cameras. It’s a subject complicated by the ultra-clear resolutions of modern digital cameras, demanding equally sharp lenses, as well as the inclination of certain directors to shoot in very challenging light conditions.

When I was first approached by DJI about reviewing the Zenmuse X7 and the Inspire 2, I said yes without any hesitation. Who wouldn't want to get their hands on this superbly built platform along with the X7? Then it dawned on me. I’ve never flown a drone like this before. Not that I didn’t want to, but it was that darn FAA License thing (or lack of) kind of in the way. I was very tempted to just fly it anyways, but then I thought maybe I would be better off calling in a favor or two to do this review the right way.
