I might not send this one back. Ok, I know I say that a lot (like all the time) but in this might be the case this time, not kidding. After shooting with the Panasonic AU-EVA1 over the last several weeks I have come to the not so modest conclusion that this is one heck of a camera. I say that in the midst of a stream of new or updated cameras from a bunch of manufacturers that started in mid-2017 and haven’t stopped yet. So what makes the Panasonic EVA1 stand out? Thought you would never ask.

In the intimate (and way too cool) setting of the Neuhous Theater and under a gorgeous Los Angles twilight, DJI unleashed maybe — just maybe — one of the most captivating and interesting new products in recent memory. The Zenmuse X7 with a 35mm sensor and a full set of new carbon fiber lens designed specifically to work with the 35mm sensor. Gotta tell you straight up - they knocked it out of the park. Long known for excellence in the drone world, DJI seems keen on not only keeping up but also surpassing the norm. What was on display wasn’t just new product but some new ways of approaching the production and post-production workflow.

Schneider adds 18mm, 25mm and 100mm lenses to its popular Schneider-Kreuznach Xenon FF-Prime family that already includes the 35mm, 50mm and 75mm focal lengths. They are purpose built for digital cinematography with cameras including RED Dragon, Canon C100/C300/C500, Arri Alexa, Sony F5/F55 and HDSLR cameras, and cover the full 45mm image circle usable on Canon 5D Mark III and Nikon D800 cameras. These compact lenses are designed for 4K and beyond resolution (4096 x 2304 pixels).

To start, its full auto & manual modes, its two XLR inputs, and an HDSDI slot packaged with the ability to shoot 1920x1080 at 59.94p are notable. While traveling on shoots, I was impressed with the capability to be able to record 1080p at 60fps within a moment’s notice. This frame rate is a new feature to the Canon line of cameras, which gives this camera a competitive edge. It is also easy to manage when set to auto mode, which comes in handy if a novice needs to use the camera on a small crew shoot, or to simply capture any ‘run-and-gun’ footage.

As I looked out of my office window this morning at the raging snowstorm currently hammering New England, it occurred to me that NAB 2017 is right around the corner! I hope you will have your best walking/running shoes ready because this year's NAB is shaping up to be a real whopper of a show. All preliminary indications tell me that this could be the year of some exciting new breakout products and as always the continued refinement of existing products. Someone who knows me asked, “Are you excited about NAB?” Guess I couldn’t hold back my enthusiasm for one of the greatest technology showcases going when I said “Heck ya!"

When I was first approached by DJI about reviewing the Zenmuse X7 and the Inspire 2, I said yes without any hesitation. Who wouldn't want to get their hands on this superbly built platform along with the X7? Then it dawned on me. I’ve never flown a drone like this before. Not that I didn’t want to, but it was that darn FAA License thing (or lack of) kind of in the way. I was very tempted to just fly it anyways, but then I thought maybe I would be better off calling in a favor or two to do this review the right way.
