by Bradford HillThe Canon XA25 Pro HD Camcorder is a compact 1/2" inch CMOS Sensor Camera with a lot of great and unexpected stand-out features. To start, its full auto & manual modes, its two XLR inputs, and an HDSDI slot packaged with the ability to shoot 1920x1080 at 59.94p are notable. While traveling on shoots, I was impressed with the capability to be able to record 1080p at 60fps within a moment’s notice. This frame rate is a new feature to the Canon line of cameras, which gives this camera a competitive edge. It is also easy to manage when set to auto mode, which comes in handy if a novice needs to use the camera on a small crew shoot, or to simply capture any ‘run-and-gun’ footage.
The most unique part about Canon’s activation this year is going to be their lounge, themed “Canon Creative Studio.” It is designed to demonstrate how Canon can help filmmakers in every phase of production. There will also be a number of sponsored education sessions and panel discussions with directors and DPs including a special screening of the film Bending the Light followed by a lively Q&A with Stephen Goldblatt, ASC, BSC, spotlighting the creative process, the craft of cinematography, and the Canon Cinema EOS lenses and cameras that help bring their stories to life (full schedule of events below).
Spent: Looking for Change, from Academy Award-winning executive producer Davis Guggenheim (An Inconvenient Truth, Waiting for Superman) and cinematographer Greg Ephraim (All Cheerleaders Die) premiered online on The Young Turks' YouTube and Hulu channels. The film was shot by Ephraim on the Canon C300 and the EF and cinema lenses; the camera’s small profile and ease-of-use helped the filmmakers capture an intimate look into the lives of four American families wrestling with the costs of living outside the traditional financial system. by Bradford HillI always find it interesting to see how different cameras and their layouts will function under the many shooting conditions I am faced with on an every day basis. (So when Canon asked me if I wanted to shoot the XF205, I was fairly excited to give it a go.) Being that I am a full time Cinema EOS user, when I am given an opportunity to shoot with a “Documentary Style Camcorder”, it always tends to brings back memories of shooting on MiniDV with GL1’s & XL1’s. Things certainly have changed from those days and it is great to see how far these cameras have come. The Canon XF205 is a creative powerhouse packed with some of the most up-to-date technology in camera function & abilities. I must say, I was blown away by the extensive menu layout and finely tunable controls that don’t often get paired together.
Canon is sponsoring the Press Suite and the Filmmaker Lounge this year at SXSW. The Lounge will be a place for filmmakers and badgeholders to relax, recharge, escape the crowds, and grab a snack. There is almost nothing better than when I can get my hands on a camera to review. I know the EOS Canon C70 has been out for a while now, but sometimes I have to wait my turn. Spoiler alert: It was well worth the wait. The C70 is a great camera. You should know as a disclaimer I have been shooting with Canon cameras and lenses for a long time — C100, C100 Mark ll C200 and a few others.
