Colorist TAL Perfects the Balancing Act of Color Grading TBS’ ‘King of the Nerds’ with DaVinci Resolve
Due to its unique competitions and unexpected surprises, “King of the Nerds” is not your typical reality show. But that didn't deter freelance colorist Yoram Tal, better known as just Tal, from jumping aboard to color grade the series, for which he uses DaVinci Resolve.
When Westfield Corporation and Los Angeles World Airports (LAWA) wanted to create promotional videos documenting the TBIT’s transformation and showcasing the new terminal, they required an L.A. based production facility that would deliver on the same level of high quality standards. They turned to Noah Clark, owner of Station22, a full service video production and post production company located in Los Angeles offering scripting, storyboarding, casting, shooting, editing, mixing, voice over, color correction and visual effects.

So we decided to get an interview with the man who made sure our beloved characters always showed up crystal clear week after week, colorist, Tom Sartori.Q: As a colorist for Breaking Bad, what was a major post-production challenge you had to deal with? A: A constant challenge was to maintain stamina throughout the eight-hour session budgeted for final color. Some 500 or more shots had to be perfected within this timeframe, so the procedure, in very rapid succession, was always: identify the game plan, execute, verify color match, and then move on to the next shot.
We recently spoke with Director, Editor and Creative Tony Gallardo about using DaVinci Resolve 15 Public Beta on several upcoming social media spots for Copper Gel pain reliever. For the project, Tony used DaVinci Resolve 15 extensively for editing, sound design, Fusion (to add titles) and color grading/finishing.

What camera system will we use? What casting decisions need to be made? Who the hell can convert my scribbles into a real storyboard?There’s a step often left out of the above question process, but one that, as a Director or Producer, does have a significant effect on your picture. In fact, this step is the first point of contact between the enigma of a performance and the camera.
As we start winding towards the dog days of summer, I was recently given the opportunity to get in front of the URSA Mini Pro 4.6K and the DaVinci Resolve Control Panel. This was a new and different approach to looking at products that come through the doors at ProductionHUB. Normally we might get a camera or lighting kit but to get two production/post production related products together was cool. As a production professional (like many of you) I am always looking at the budget and ways to control costs. So the idea of being able to upgrade in the field and enhance the post-production suite without crushing the budget was enticing to say the least. But before I get there, lets take a look at where production always has to start. It starts with the camera of course.
So before we get to our illustrious winners, I think providing a little background is in order. When the ProductionHUB team set out to chose our Award of Excellence Winners it seemed like such a simple task. Slam dunk, 1, 2 3. Hour to pick the winners tops right? That would be such a resounding NO. Everyone (including me) in that room fought tooth and nail to do one thing. That one thing was to get it right. So after a lot of arguing, persuading, and flat out shouting at each other we had our list. Wasn’t easy or very pretty but when the dust settled there it was. There was so many solid products out there, and I won’t lie we all had our own favorites. But that didn’t matter. So,some four arduous hours later we were done. Best of the best. Let’s go!
