To start, its full auto & manual modes, its two XLR inputs, and an HDSDI slot packaged with the ability to shoot 1920x1080 at 59.94p are notable. While traveling on shoots, I was impressed with the capability to be able to record 1080p at 60fps within a moment’s notice. This frame rate is a new feature to the Canon line of cameras, which gives this camera a competitive edge. It is also easy to manage when set to auto mode, which comes in handy if a novice needs to use the camera on a small crew shoot, or to simply capture any ‘run-and-gun’ footage.

Oh...and thousands upon thousands of covers and cases for smartphones and tablets were also rolled out. The New York Times today had a quick recap that really encapsulated what the show has become: a convention-sized version of the Sky Mall magazine found on airplanes as you often spend as much time thinking “why would anyone need that” as you do “what a great idea.”For those involved in TV production the show has two main functions: to provide a possible roadmap for future distribution platforms like Ultra-HD and small-screen video that may impact production tool purchasing plans and also as a place to see new consumer-level cameras, etc. that could play a role in a professional-level production.

Thanks to small, high-quality digital cameras, professional and personal drones have completely transformed the production industry, letting filmmakers capture shots that were previously unattainable to non-studio filmmakers. To capture aerial footage a few years ago, you had to either book time in a helicopter containing a professional operator, remote head, and bulky HD camera, or, for lower altitudes, rent the services of a small remote helicopter and operator from a company like Flying-Cam or Coptervision. As you can probably guess, helicopters don’t come cheap.
As technology continues to progress at a rapid pace, post-production is set to change dramatically. Besides great new software features, compute (and therefore render) power continues to increase with faster processors and more powerful xPUs (GPUs, TPUs, etc.). This means real-time editing of HD, 4K, 8K, AR and VR is fast becoming a reality, ultimately shortening post-production timeframes.
Many of us “industry veterans” have marveled to see the exponential rate of speed at which our industry has grown. My partner, Mark Schulze, started our video production business “Crystal Pyramid Productions” in 1981. So together we have witnessed the advent of videotape (VHS, Beta (which met with a tragic death), ¾”, 1”, Betacam SP, D2 and DVCam). We moved from 4x3 standard definition to 16x9 HD. Then we abandoned tape and entered the digital realm of discs and cards. We held our breath during the “3D Scare,” thinking we might have to address the need for it with our clients. Fortunately, nobody seems to appreciate wearing those 3D glasses.
