Just starting out in the world of production and not sure where to begin? A lot of people new to the industry (or "green" as we sometimes call it) get their feet wet as a Production Assistant. This is a great way to gain on-set experience while exposing yourself to many different facets of production so you can decide which areas you gravitate towards and may want to pursue. PA's are often asked to wear a lot of different hats. So what makes a good PA?
Over the years I have had the opportunity to work with some of the best and brightest minds in sports production. Everybody involved in the production side of things has brought their own unique style and expertise to the table - outstanding producers and directors, technical directors, audio engineers with mad skills, rock solid camera ops, and dare I say hundreds of other technicians, grips, and production assistants, and just a lot of other people that make great sports productions happen. I'd like to take a couple of minutes to run down a few tips for new location sound mixers. These are observations learned in over more than 30 years in both broadcast and location sound. These are not technical tips. Rather, they are lessons that I've received that made me a more professional, team oriented and in demand mixer.
