As we slide into August and the dog days of summer, production companies and production personnel keep asking me the same question over and over. That question is: “Are we there yet?” It seems to be the overwhelming theme over the last month doesn’t it? To be honest, I think that the jury is still out. In some areas remote truck production “seems” to be working. Some mobile units are carefully rolling out and taking on new “remote” productions full stream ahead. Other truck owners are still taking a 'wait and see' approach and working in what I call a “hybrid” work model. In the truest sense of the word we are talking remote production but with a lot of caveats.

Running our video production company used to be about jumping on a plane to meet the next story in person. That all stopped the second week of March - when Covid-19 hit, my team went from talking face-to-face with our clients with full-sized cinema cameras to get the best angle to...nothing. Working on-location wasn’t an option. We weren’t allowed to travel. We weren’t even allowed out of our houses, let alone to work with a crew.
Remote production in Broadcast has been the driving force behind cost-saving and workflow efficiencies across the industry for many years now. The term itself has had a number of different meanings. Historically ‘remote production’ in the sports media industry meant the majority of the show was produced onsite at the venue and pretty much everything that was required for the broadcast such as graphics, replays etc. would be handled from the event location (or more usually the car park next door!). Over time this has changed and more of those functions have been centralised. The advantages are obvious - you have a team of specialists who focus on their core expertise such as producing graphics and this team can work on multiple events in a day reducing costs, environmental impacts, wasted time and in most cases improving the quality of the output, it’s a win/win for all concerned.
