Speaking from personal experience, choosing each recipient of the NAB Award of Excellence gets harder and harder every year. There were so many great products and services to choose from at the show. Each panelist defended their selection of why a product should be on this list — and the competition was fierce. Out of the 1,700+ exhibitors, ProductionHUB congratulates these recipients of the prestigious 2018 Awards of Excellence (listed in alphabetical order).

Dialogue Match is a Pro Tools AudioSuite tool intended for re-recording mixers who deliver the final sound mix for films and television programs. For decades, these mixers have had the tedious job of matching dialogue from lavalier, boom mics, and ADR in order to create a seamless and cohesive dialogue performance. This long and work-intensive process takes valuable time away from crafting the sound of a scene and producing a final mix. Using machine learning, Dialogue Match reduces this process to seconds, making it the first tool to automatically learn and match the reverberant character of dialogue recordings.

It's the most wonderful time of year. Yes, I'm referring to ProductionHUB's 2021 Awards of Excellence! You would think that after all this time putting the Awards of Excellence list together would be easy, right? Oh boy, not even close to easy. But that’s the way we want it. Just as in years past, our award recipients earned their place on this year's list due to their innovative technology and creativity. Products are always chosen on merit and innovative design. Each was carefully selected to represent the best of the best. The selection process wasn’t easy—it never is—but in the end we feel our ProductionHUB 2021 Awards of Excellence winners list was well worth the wait. We hope you’ll agree!

So before we get to our illustrious winners, I think providing a little background is in order. When the ProductionHUB team set out to chose our Award of Excellence Winners it seemed like such a simple task. Slam dunk, 1, 2 3. Hour to pick the winners tops right? That would be such a resounding NO. Everyone (including me) in that room fought tooth and nail to do one thing. That one thing was to get it right. So after a lot of arguing, persuading, and flat out shouting at each other we had our list. Wasn’t easy or very pretty but when the dust settled there it was. There was so many solid products out there, and I won’t lie we all had our own favorites. But that didn’t matter. So,some four arduous hours later we were done. Best of the best. Let’s go!

Iceland gave us more sounds and opportunities per day than anywhere else we have ever recorded. There is no such thing as a perfect field recording location, but Iceland provided more than its fair share of goldilocks situations. As a field recordist, you are always avoiding air traffic. Due to its low population, Iceland has relatively few local flights and due to its northerly location, few international flights pass overhead so one would be hard-pressed to find a better location in that regard. Iceland, while mostly devoid of airplane noises, provided its own unique form of air traffic in the form of geese. While we are used to looking at air radar maps, we had to start looking at topographical maps to avoid low lying fields near rivers or we would find ourselves in the middle of noisy, nesting geese.

With the recent success of IBC 2022, it's safe to say that the production community is close to being back in full form — maybe not full speed — but certainly moving in the right direction. There is, however, a noticeable and encouraging uptick in all parts of the business.
