What camera system will we use? What casting decisions need to be made? Who the hell can convert my scribbles into a real storyboard?There’s a step often left out of the above question process, but one that, as a Director or Producer, does have a significant effect on your picture. In fact, this step is the first point of contact between the enigma of a performance and the camera.
From couch-surfing to sets like Walking Dead and Quantico, it takes grit. It takes determination. It takes an unwavering, fierce passion for the film industry to stay on top of producer’s minds. And, being a certified Apple Tech sure can’t hurt, either. At least according to JC Conklin, whose recent credits included Director’s Assistant on Walking Dead and Office Assistant, then Runner on ABC’s Quantico.
First off, let me preface this review by saying nothing brings me more joy than getting a camera to try out and review. Some of the cameras I get are good and others are (in my mind) fantastic, great and all that. The Sony FS7II falls squarely in the second category. The second and maybe the more important set of questions are simple. I always ask myself, what would make me want to buy this camera? Secondly, what would compel (you) want to go out and buy this camera? Lastly, when it is all said and done, does it fit into what I am doing production-wise?

Irregardless, now that I’ve had a look? I ain’t ever going back. Our client, Go RVing, needed a wide-range of marketing video content for Broadcast and Web use, and they brought me in to direct a 4-day shoot on Michigan’s West Coast. The first day was all interviews with actual users telling their unscripted stories to camera. The second and third days involved shooting eight different scenic broll situations with 20+ talent members in various camping situations. The fourth day was a practice in planning, logistics, and highway patrol as we shot seven vehicles on a large stretch of a US highway, through rolling vineyards and driving on wooded country roads.
The production industry is always evolving, from new ways to film to breakthroughs in production technology, with many women spearheading initiatives that impact the industry and set changes in motion.
