Review: Sony Vegas Pro 13
by Andre ElijahSony Vegas Pro 13 is a Non Linear Editing system from the folks at Sony Creative Software akin to other professional mainstream NLEs from Avid, Adobe, and Apple. Like those other NLE's, Vegas Pro 13 has all of the day to day essentials required by a modern editor including, a timeline, media bins, a viewport for the selected clip, as well as a viewport for the timeline. Additionally - all of the tools in terms of making selections and trimming are where you'd expect. Since I come from a career of mainly editing documentaries - one of the things I've come across lots of is mixed formats of footage. RED, 5D mark II, GoPro, P2, XAVC, and files transcoded in ProRes. I'm glad to report that all of these formats work easily in Vegas Pro 13 - and it is as simple as drag and drop. Additionally you can mix and match all these types of footage in the same timeline without issue.

CES 2014: What the Hype About Tomorrow Means to Your Business Today
by Ken KerschbaumerLast week the Consumer Electronics Show was held in Las Vegas, the annual convention of “all things electronics” as everything from smart toothbrushes to new electronic fitness bracelets and, of course, ultra-expensive Ultra-HD TV sets were introduced. Oh...and thousands upon thousands of covers and cases for smartphones and tablets were also rolled out. The New York Times today had a quick recap that really encapsulated what the show has become: a convention-sized version of the Sky Mall magazine found on airplanes as you often spend as much time thinking “why would anyone need that” as you do “what a great idea.”For those involved in TV production the show has two main functions: to provide a possible roadmap for future distribution platforms like Ultra-HD and small-screen video that may impact production tool purchasing plans and also as a place to see new consumer-level cameras, etc. that could play a role in a professional-level production.

For the Love of 4K: Latest Trends/New Products
Many of us “industry veterans” have marveled to see the exponential rate of speed at which our industry has grown. My partner, Mark Schulze, started our video production business “Crystal Pyramid Productions” in 1981. So together we have witnessed the advent of videotape (VHS, Beta (which met with a tragic death), ¾”, 1”, Betacam SP, D2 and DVCam). We moved from 4x3 standard definition to 16x9 HD. Then we abandoned tape and entered the digital realm of discs and cards. We held our breath during the “3D Scare,” thinking we might have to address the need for it with our clients. Fortunately, nobody seems to appreciate wearing those 3D glasses.

NAB Part II: Ready or Not, Here it Comes
Ok, as said in NAB Part I, there is a lot going on for NAB this year. We are a mere few days away from 2017 NAB and you can feel the energy level starting to really pick up. Ask anyone on the ProductionHUB team and they will tell you the shear amount of news coming in from over 1700 exhibitors is a lot of info. But not to worry, I’ve cherry picked more of the must see booths at the show. NAB Part II is going to be a blast. But if you don’t see your favorite lens or gear here, be sure to check out our very own NABHUB.com or Facebook. From the Beginning: Yes, It IS All About the Lens!

Smokin’ Hot Atomos Shogun Flame: What You See is What You Get
Let’s get it straight right from the get-go. Right now there are several very good field recorders/monitors out in the field as we speak. I have had the good fortune of using and reviewing others such as Blackmagic Design Video Assist ($895) and Video Design PIX-E7 ($1695) to name two.

The Countdown is On! (Part I): NAB 2017 to Highlight New Gear, Refined Delivery
As I looked out of my office window this morning at the raging snowstorm currently hammering New England, it occurred to me that NAB 2017 is right around the corner! I hope you will have your best walking/running shoes ready because this year's NAB is shaping up to be a real whopper of a show. All preliminary indications tell me that this could be the year of some exciting new breakout products and as always the continued refinement of existing products. Someone who knows me asked, “Are you excited about NAB?” Guess I couldn’t hold back my enthusiasm for one of the greatest technology showcases going when I said “Heck ya!"
