While the payoff for an effects shot done well can be invigorating, injury effects in action and inserts take resources, planning and collaboration.
The action thriller "San Andreas," now in theaters, is packed with catastrophic destruction, achieved in part through 247 complex visual effects shots executed by Method Studios facilities. As one of the main visual effects vendors on the film, Method was responsible for the entire downtown Los Angeles sequence, in which an earthquake decimates the city, and also contributed to the San Francisco sequence.
A remake of the 1973 film of the same name, Papillon tells the epic story of Henri “Papillon” Charrière, a safecracker who, after wrongly convicted of murder, must escape the infamous French prison colony of Devil’s Island. The film tells a thrilling, brutal story of survival as the characters fight both the elements and the encroaching effects of isolation-induced insanity. Cinematographer Hagen Bogdanski shares his process in shooting the film, and how he dealt with the elements to find the emotional human core at the center of the story.
Lighting is the secret weapon in any production; it sets the scene and tells the audience how they should be feeling with dramatic lighting effects generating intrigue. On lower-budget productions it can also position them and tell them where they are; warmer light with added gels can create a rich chocolate tone to be used in period dramas for example.
