How Non-engineers can Deliver Loudness Compliant Audio Faster Than Real-time
Over the past decade, most of the world has adopted some form of loudness legislation for television. This is wonderful news for casual viewers who understandably hate loud commercials, as well as for the Federal Communications Commission (FCC), which received approximately 1,000 complaints and 5,000 inquiries about excessively loud TV commercials between 2008 and 2012. But, for those who work in television post-production, it can complicate matters somewhat.

Unique Needs of 24x7 Running Storage & MAM for Reality TV
Today’s reality TV productions are ambitious in their size and tight broadcast schedules, requiring a multitude of impressive engineering feats. When not tracking every move of a housewife, psychic medium or celebrity, other shows such as Hell’s Kitchen, America’s Got Talent or The Voice closely follow the progress of contestants and are broken up into segments: the documentary portions that tell the back stories of contestants, the behind-the- scenes shots that show the contestants preparing for the competition, and then the (sometimes live, sometimes not) actual competition portion itself.
The Efficiencies of IMF
SMPTE was hosting a major push on the IMF specification (SMPTE ST2067) with the Digital Production Partnership (DPP) out of England. The IMF specification was created to make the Interoperable Master Format (IMF), interoperable, so vendors and customers could use it. The IMF standard requires changes in the way that content is created in order to make greater efficiencies for broadcast and online content distribution. In addition to SMPTE and DPP, the North American Broadcasters Association (NABA), The European Broadcasting Union (EBU), several manufacturers and end users have been involved in making the IMF specification.
Aerial Authorizations Get Automated
In the short history of drones, acquiring authorization to fly has been a real hassle. FAA regulations require that you provide advanced notice and be cleared before take off—even for a flight under 400 feet. But a new app called LAANC promises to make life easier for drone pilots and operators who want the freedom to launch with ease at a moment’s notice.
In Review: The Sony FS7II Delivers When It Really Counts!
First off, let me preface this review by saying nothing brings me more joy than getting a camera to try out and review. Some of the cameras I get are good and others are (in my mind) fantastic, great and all that. The Sony FS7II falls squarely in the second category. The second and maybe the more important set of questions are simple. I always ask myself, what would make me want to buy this camera? Secondly, what would compel (you) want to go out and buy this camera? Lastly, when it is all said and done, does it fit into what I am doing production-wise?
The End of Wireless Audio as We Know it
Whenever a year begins, I've always found it beneficial to reflect and prepare for the changes and challenges each new year brings. Today I’m going to focus on something invisible to most, that soon will become a very visible problem. However, with proper planning and awareness, the impact of a problem can often be reduced or eliminated entirely.
The 2019 Awards of Excellence Winners Shine Bright
With over 1600 exhibitors, crunching the ProductionHUB Awards of Excellence list down to just 12 outstanding winners and five special mentions was not an easy task. Getting things right never is, is it? It was incredibly hard to put this list in order. Congratulations to all of this year's winners!
Production Safety 2021: New Protocols Continue to Reshape Production Landscape
In the words of the late great Jerry Garcia and The Dead, “What a long strange trip it’s been.”
Truer words have never been spoken. But the question(s) still remains, Where are we (our beloved industry) in terms of actually working? Is it safe or not safe? Consistent production is still a moving target. Even as we speak, some if not all of Los Angeles based productions have been shut down again, and the NCAA has just announced they are conducting the Mens’ Division One basketball tournament in a bubble in Indianapolis.
Working with Colorists: A ProductionHUB Exclusive with Colorist Juan Cabrera, ASC Associate Member
Recently we had the opportunity to talk at length with Colorist Juan Cabrera, ASC Associate Member. Juan provided some incredibly valuable insights on his journey and on the art of being a colorist for major motion pictures and television. Juan also shed some light on how everyone at all levels of the production workflow can benefit from learning that the journey from beginning to the end really begins in pre production. Very enlightening to say the least. Check it out!
