Directed by Aneesh Chaganty and starring John Cho, Searching proves just how powerful technology has become by bringing viewers into the story through the lens of one MacBook and iPhones. The editors used Adobe Premiere Pro to craft a suspenseful narrative of a father searching for his missing daughter under the unique confines of FaceTime conversations, iMessages, Google searches and live-streamed news. Editors Nicholas D. Johnson and Will Merrick shared their experience working on the film, its challenges and upcoming projects.
The Super Bowl packs enough drama to turn even the most unrepentant non-fan into a super fan for a day. Leading up to the 51st face off, we had the hype, the social media darlings, and the hashtags. Some hoped their team would #RiseUp. Others wondered if theirs would win #OneMore. At the core of all of it was one thing: the story.
So with another IBC in the rearview mirror and NAB NY along with AES just a few days away, you would think we could catch our collective breath. Not going to happen. With more new cameras, new sensors and new gear announcements than I can remember (outside of NAB) there is just a ton of cool stuff going on in our business. Which makes for very good news for us here at ProductionHUB. The problem is where to start? Simple. I am just going to dive right in with both feet. Not in any particular order either but here goes.

You assemble a team of talented, creative, and passionate crusaders in their fields to direct, produce, and edit the documentary. You include professionals who bring a depth of experience as well as newer associates who add cutting-edge technical skills — all women, all impassioned by the inspiration of the woman herself, Ruth Bader Ginsburg, Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of the United States.
If I had to pick one constant among independent film festival submissions it would be unintelligible dialogue. The cause of desperation of every director; the bane of every mixing engineer’s existence; the source of suffering of your friends and family, forced to go through a whole movie they don’t understand because the actors’ words simply can’t be heard. This and many other nuances of your film’s sound are the victims of a few often overlooked details, which in turn result in the delivery of a subpar soundtrack, driving your audio post team insane and wasting production money. Good news is these mistakes can very easily be prevented. You can start by tackling a few key issues often associated with your role.
Over the years, I have had the pleasure of meeting with and speaking to incredibly talented independent filmmakers in various stages of their filmmaking careers. Some of whom are innately new media savvy and they understand the value that publicity brings. In addition to having an entertaining or powerful story to tell, they understand that marketing and publicity are essential to premiering at a film festival, finding distribution, and selling tickets as well as to building a long-term film career. The most astute filmmakers are those that budget for and hire a publicity team. Others want to take on publicity themselves. If you’re going to DIY your film’s publicity, keep these things in mind:

When it comes to bringing a story to life with sound, there's more to it than meets the eye... or ear. Woody Woodhall, CAS is President of Allied Post Audio in Santa Monica, CA and is an award winning supervising sound editor, sound designer and rerecording mixer. He has sound supervised and mixed feature films, documentaries and for television he’s VO recorded, sound edited and mixed hundreds of episodes of programming for MTV, Comedy Central, Food Network, Nat Geo, History, USA Network and VH-1 to name a few.
Today’s reality TV productions are ambitious in their size and tight broadcast schedules, requiring a multitude of impressive engineering feats. When not tracking every move of a housewife, psychic medium or celebrity, other shows such as Hell’s Kitchen, America’s Got Talent or The Voice closely follow the progress of contestants and are broken up into segments: the documentary portions that tell the back stories of contestants, the behind-the- scenes shots that show the contestants preparing for the competition, and then the (sometimes live, sometimes not) actual competition portion itself.
