This mid-winter convocation has become the pre-eminent gathering of buyers, distributors and producers of reality TV, documentaries and other non-fiction programming in the Americas. Consequently, it also attracts hundreds of producers working in these genres eager to distribute finished or nearly finished programs, and to pre-sell projects in varying stages of development.

Pioneering Second Screen: 5 Tips for Creating Narrative Multi-Screen Content

We’re accustomed to interactive tweets during live TV events and applications that expand on televised content, such as the Game of Thrones app for HBO. What we haven’t seen much of, but certainly will in the near future, is the proliferation of narrative second screen content. This means that while viewers are watching the main screen programming, a secondary device (such as a tablet or smartphone) will provide synchronized content that enhances the viewing experience. Samsung has been a pioneer in developing the applications and infrastructure necessary to make this type of programming a reality. In 2012, the company launched the Samsung Second Screen Storytellers challenge in conjunction with the New York Television Festival. Our team created a demo that won the challenge and we spent the better part of 2013 creating D-TEC, a television pilot that has second screen storytelling in its DNA. As the first team to build a narrative second screen TV series from the ground up, we’re happy to share what we’ve learned.

In 2018, according to Variety, Netflix is estimated to spend $8 billion, and TechCrunch reports that Apple will invest $1 billion into the original content scene. This has created an "arms race" for original programming at traditional cable media companies. For those in the production game, all of this investment in original content should be music to our ears, but in reality, it hasn't been. How come?

Revenge of the Documentary Rocks at Real Screen Summit in DC
At the recent Real Screen Summit I Washington DC, the panel, “Revenge of the Documentary” suggested that docs may be undergoing a rebirth on American TV in the next few years. Major brands like Discovery, National Geographic, Showtime, HBO etc proclaimed that they will be relying increasingly on documentaries to chart a course back to their core values and away from the homogeneity of similarly formatted unscripted, so-called reality TV shows.
