This year NAB NY was back and in a bigger way then many in the industry expected. As with a lot of you, I had more than a few questions leading up to the show about who was going to attend, as well as how many attendees and exhibitors there might be. To be honest, I think those were some pretty fair questions given that there had not been a NAB show in NY in three years. I in for a real surprise.
With the recent success of IBC 2022, it's safe to say that the production community is close to being back in full form — maybe not full speed — but certainly moving in the right direction. There is, however, a noticeable and encouraging uptick in all parts of the business. While we know that some productions and services didn’t miss a beat, there were many others that weren't as fortunate.
Right from the start, it was impossible to miss the glitz and glamor of the 2022 Tribeca Festival—feature film premieres, superstar power, and of course the red carpet! The wow factor was in full force. There is always so much going on, it’s hard to keep up.
By any measurable standards, I would deem 2022 NAB a success. The show was cleaner, leaner, and more focused than any NAB that I can remember in recent history. With an announced attendance of 55,000 there was definitely a new and unleashed positive energy that one could see and feel. But there was also a ton of new technologies to explore and it was just great to reconnect with so many friends and new professionals in our space. But before I drill down to a few particulars, here are some of the major trends that you need to follow and that will have a definite impact on our production workflows for quite some time.
If you've been following us for awhile now, then you're probably aware of our annual NAB Awards of Excellence awards. The Awards of Excellence recognize exceptional technological innovation and practice. Each year, ProductionHUB editorial staff and industry experts collaborate to carefully vet and choose the winners. This year, as we continue to navigate the pandemic, we are conducting the entire awards process virtually. Award recipients are trailblazers in technological growth, products that help streamline workflows for film and video production, as well as advance the art of cinematography.
The countdown is on. Many of us are days from getting on a plane and are heading out for 2022 NAB. Man it’s been way to long, right? In Part One of our ProductionHUB NAB coverage, a lot of new product information was just starting to come out, bit by bit. There was almost a measured release of the things we might see and hear about at the show. Well, the wait is over.
When it comes to working on the the biggest productions, the Super Bowl and the Olympics are at the top of the list. Yes, I know there are a lot of other sporting events, just not at the same time! The Super Bowl will be played out at SoFi Stadium in Los Angeles, while there will be dozens of mobile production units in the broadcast compound. Then for good measure, add in hundreds of cameras, thousands of production professionals and sports journalists all focused to deliver once in a lifetime images in what many consider two of the highest pinnacles of sports production.
It's the most wonderful time of year. Yes, I'm referring to ProductionHUB's 2021 Awards of Excellence! You would think that after all this time putting the Awards of Excellence list together would be easy, right? Oh boy, not even close to easy. But that’s the way we want it.
Just as in years past, our award recipients earned their place on this year's list due to their innovative technology and creativity. Products are always chosen on merit and innovative design. Each was carefully selected to represent the best of the best. The selection process wasn’t easy—it never is—but in the end we feel our ProductionHUB 2021 Awards of Excellence winners list was well worth the wait. We hope you’ll agree!
