Program Description:
Please join CLA in celebrating the American Bar Association's Mediation Week with two distinguished members of our Arts Arbitration and Mediation Services Party Select Mediation Panel. The mediators will discuss the basics of mediation, common conflicts encountered by arts and entertainment professionals, practical skills that can be used when disputes arise. They will also share some stories about notable arts and entertainment disputes that have been resolved through mediation. This program is designed for individuals involved in arts and entertainment professions, but all members of the community are welcome to attend.

Presenters:
Joe Markowitz has served as a mediator for more than fifteen years, has taken well over 100 hours of courses and seminars in mediation, and is a member of the Mediation Panels in both the District Court and Bankruptcy Court in the Central District of California, as well as the Los Angeles County Superior Court. He is also the President-elect of the Southern California Mediation Association. Mr. Markowitz received a Bachelor of Arts degree from Columbia University in 1976 and a Juris Doctor, with honors, from the University of Chicago Law School in 1979. Mr. Markowitz has substantial experience in entertainment and intellectual property cases, including patent, trademark, copyright and trade secrets. Joe served as chairman of the Legal Committee of the Los Angeles Conservancy, an organization active in historic preservation and is proud to say that he was instrumental in saving the Cinerama Dome. Mr. Markowitz publishes a leading mediatino blog at http://www.mediate-la.com.

Terri Lubaroff - As a commercial mediator, arbitrator and facilitator, Ms. Lubaroff specializes in disputes in the business, legal and entertainment communities. Terri received her J.D. from the University of Florida College of Law, and also has a B.A. in Fine Arts from the University of Florida, where she majored in acting and directing. She started her entertainment career in the Motion Picture Literary Department at International Creative Management (ICM), one of the largest talent agencies in the world. After ICM, Terri ran an independent film production company, founded a new media, genre-based Internet content company, and worked at boutique TV literary agency Kaplan-Stahler-Gumer where her work impressed an “A-List” TV star to hire her to run his company, Humble Journey Films. That successful six-year relationship resulted in the writing and development of several feature film projects, the sale of nine TV pilots to networks such as NBC, CBS, FOX and VH1, and an overall development and production deal at Paramount and CBS.
