What part will you play?
You will be a senior member of the Video Platform Services team helping to reimagine TV. The Turner Video Platform Services group enables delivery of online live streaming and video on demand content across web, mobile, OTT devices.
As a Chief Engineer you will help design, implement, and support live video delivery strategies across all Turner brands.
You'll work as a subject matter expert for live video services to include video content conditioning/grooming, encoding/transcoding, packaging, digital rights management (DRM) and security, and content distribution through a major content distribution network (CDN).
You will design blueprints for industry leading live video workflows and help buildout proof of concepts and support production services.
You will report to the Sr. Director of Content Platforms and work closely with the Director of Video Product Delivery to help drive business conversations with clients and stakeholders.
You will also partner with various video operations teams across Turner (including iStreamPlanet) and the Strategic Platforms in order to bridge the gap between operations, implementation, and strategic initiatives.
You must demonstrate your ability to lead technically.
You will be most successful in this role if you are a good multi-tasker, you have deep experience and knowledge of video containers, codecs, streaming protocols, and encoding tools, you possess a strong understanding of end-to-end video delivery, and you have prior experience designing and supporting end-to-end video workflows.
We will be more excited if you bring a background of development in Perl, python, Java, or C++ and you have hands on experience with Cloud Services such as Amazon Web Services or Google Cloud.
What will you be doing?
Working with the Director of Video Product Delivery and brands to understand and develop technical requirements for new live video workflows
Building proof of concepts based on architectural designs to support large initiatives
Working alongside other Chief Engineers and Solutions Architects across the GTO organization to design end-to-end video solutions
Assisting in budget planning and resource needs including project or Agile sprint planning, bill of materials, and labor forecasting
Leading or participating in technical conversations with other Chief Engineers and Solutions Architects, technical implementation teams, support teams, and business representatives.
Making recommendations on productions settings in areas of encoding/transcoding, packaging, digital rights management, and content distribution
Working closely with the Strategic Platforms to stay abreast of emerging technologies and forward looking strategy
Researching and recommending industry best practices to ensure that Turner is at the bleeding edge of live video technology
Connecting appropriate video solutions with identifiable business values to solve current and future live video streaming needs
Documenting technical requirements for new product capabilities
Working with operations teams to define standard operational procedures for new video workflows
Experience / Skills
What do we require from you?
Degree in computer science or related field or equivalent work experience.
6+ years of prior experience in TVE, IPTV, catch-up TV, cloud DVR, dynamic ad insertion, and/or other video solutions
6+ years of experience with OTT video, ABR video and encoding, DRM and other content protection and player technology
6+ years of video encoding/transcoding, video packaging, and distribution of video content through a major content delivery network (CDN) such as Akamai.
4 years of previous architecture experience where a vast knowledge of principles, patterns, and video architecture best practices were utilized
Demonstrated understanding of IP networking and enterprise infrastructure
Demonstrated understanding of video streaming protocols such as HLS, DASH, etc.
Demonstrated ability to communicate technical requirements and transfer knowledge to a project team, communicate effectively, and simplify complex technical requirements into business value
Demonstrated ability to research and learn new technologies.
Demonstrated understanding of broadcast video standards such as SCTE104, SCTE35, CEA-608/708, xAVC, etc.
