Ball State University invites nominations and applications for the Dean of the College of Communication, Information, and Media. The Dean reports to the Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs and serves as the chief academic and administrative officer of the College. The successful candidate will plan, direct, and coordinate the operational, personnel, budgetary, fundraising, and student activities of the college; provide leadership and direction in the development and implementation of curricula, academic programs, outside resource development, and all related activities; foster interdisciplinarity and promote open communication within and beyond the college; facilitate departments in achieving their goals within a unifying college vision; effectively represent the college and maintain a relationship with external constituents, including benefactors and alumni.
Traditionally progressive, the College of Communication, Information, and Media mindfully fosters a collegial, collaborative, interdisciplinary, and student-centered culture that values innovative teaching, community engagement, excellent scholarship, and creative endeavors. The College has 80 full-time faculty and currently enrolls approximately 3000 students in nationally-recognized baccalaureate and master’s degree programs through the academic Departments of Communication Studies, Journalism, Telecommunications, and the Center for Information and Communication Sciences.
The College is housed together in state-of- the-art facilities that include the local NPR and PBS stations, generously outfitted spaces for approximately 45 student organizations, and faculty and student access to cutting-edge resources. Even more impressive than our facilities are the activities that take place within those spaces. Our administration and faculty maintain relationships with alumni, community organizations, and industry professionals to expand resources and increase opportunities for collaboration and innovation. Faculty and students in each of the College’s four academic units earn international, national, regional, and state awards and recognition every year (for example, 66 Emmys since 1999, Gold Crowns, Pacemakers, national speech and debate championships).
Ball State University is located in Muncie, Indiana, approximately 45 miles northeast of Indianapolis. Experience / Skills
Minimum qualifications: Terminal degree in relevant field from an accredited college or university. At least five years of academic experience in Communication, Information, or Media; experience delivering undergraduate and/or graduate curriculum; advanced academic administrative experience; experience in fiscal management. Overall credentials that will merit a faculty appointment at a senior rank with tenure within one of the units of the College; a commitment to excellence in teaching, research, and service within the disciplines of the College; a demonstrated commitment to diversity, and advanced interpersonal skills.
Candidates must have current authorization to be employed in the U.S. without employer sponsorship.
Preferred qualifications: Ph.D from an accredited college or university. Senior-level administrative experience to provide leadership both inside the College and within the professional communities served by the College; demonstrated success generating external funding; experience in fiscal and facilities management and in fund raising; experience delivering both undergraduate and graduate curriculum. An understanding of university systems, including academic policies and procedures; an understanding of shared governance .
