The Next Gen Experience Group leads the strategy for the NBA’s global over-the-top product offerings and services. The offerings and services reach fans in 215 countries and territories around the globe by delivering live games and original programming on almost any device. The content is offered in multiple languages and through a collection of packages including micro-transactions, giving fans the ability to purchase portions of a live game.
This newly created position will be responsible for leading a global group of platform engineers in defining, developing and delivering multi-tiered architecture stack consisting of home-grown and vendor-supplied components. The ideal candidate brings strong hands-on technical skill passionate about the design, build and deployment of the NBA’s systems and digital infrastructure. The individual is a strategic thinker with the ability to evaluate, prioritize, and execute large-scale engineering initiatives and hire teams that deliver the technical platform elements required to produce the highest quality products possible. The position requires a senior presence and excellent verbal and written communication skills.
The ideal candidate will partner and collaborate with various functions to improve product quality, speed, innovation and own front-end user experience touchpoints from concept to launch. To accomplish this vision, the NBA will build a highly scalable and flexible front-end architecture that can seamlessly integrate into a hybrid cloud back-end.
-Sets the vision and organizational structure of the Platform Architecture group and works closely with multi-functional product leadership to define objectives and drive effective short and long-term strategies and plans
-Recruit, hire, train, grow, and retain a world-class team; refine and adjust the team structure as necessary to remain aligned with a dynamic business environment
-Architect and implement elegant, scalable, stable NBA experiences - expanding the scope of the ecosystem
-Represent Architecture in stakeholder discussions
-Document and promote standard methodologies on performance, platform reliability, availability and redundancy
-Partner with Operations to plan CI/CD, infrastructure transitions, upgrades, technical refresh and preventative maintenance
-Participate into annual HW and SW budgeting
-Work closely with Product Management and Marketing in defining product definitions and product roadmap
-Oversee CDN, CMS, personalization/recommendation, CIAM and distribution technologies
-Lead the development of platform architecture to support low latency streaming
-Evaluate team performance and quality, coach and mentor team members
-Respond to, isolate and resolve Platform problems, including after hours and weekend support for production systems when needed

Experience / Skills
-Deep domain expertise of Media & Entertainment cloud infrastructure solutions on AWS and knowledge of GCP, Microsoft Azure, Akamai, and/or other cloud vendor solutions
-Prior work experience in a Consulting or Architecture position within a digital media & entertainment company such as Netflix, Vimeo, YouTube, Amazon, ESPN, Comcast, WM Endeavor, IMG, Technicolor, Disney, or others desired
-15+ years’ experience and understanding of large-scale cloud infrastructure deployments and global distribution of digital content required
-Ability to build and articulate a vision for architectural strategy based on an understanding of market drivers, trends, competitive positions and opportunities
-Experience with live and on-demand OTT media platforms/technologies (VOD, SVOD, TVOD, PVOD) deployed for distribution to web, iOS, Android, smart TV’s, set-top boxes, and game consoles etc.
-Consistent track record of architecting and delivering highly scalable, available, reliable, secure, and performant systems that power video streaming services
-Experience implementing (or a keen interest in) AI based solutions (speech, emotion, sentiment, and intelligent recommendations) desired
-Experience working both independently and in a team-oriented, collaborative environment; ability to work effectively with stakeholders, business owners and team members
-Passion for continuous improvement and advancing technology solutions into VR, AR, MR, and AI/ML
-Excellent analytical, team management, problem-solving, and interpersonal skills
-Strong technical and hands on knowledge of Cloud Computing Platforms (AWS, Azure, GCP)
-Strong technical knowledge of high scale OTT TV systems and architectures
-Strong technical knowledge of high scale Content management systems and architectures
-Strong technical background on video encoding (H.264, HEVC/H.265)
-Good understanding of video packaging and OTT streaming (HLS, DASH, HDS, HSS)
-Good understanding of DRM solutions and offerings (Google Widevine, MS PlayReady, Verimatrix, Adobe Primetime, Apple FairPlay)
-Working knowledge of relevant networking technologies is highly beneficial (i.e. multicasting, routing, streaming protocols)
-Working knowledge of software development, including programming skills in Java, Python or similar
-Experience in professional sports organization (preferred)
-Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science or related field.
