This position will coordinate and contribute to telecommunications media-operations and, by extension, the university community.
Assist with day-to-day scheduling; supervise and instruct shop technicians as they install, repair and operate sound and A/V equipment. Program & maintain AV control systems (e.g. Crestron or Extron) & audio DSPs. Work with supervisor on life-cycle planning including a strategy for equipment replacement, with respect to budgets and purchasing deadlines. Record information such as time job data and as-built drawings and prints. Report project status and issues to supervisor.
Provide evaluation, maintenance, and support of presentation facilities. Inspect and comment on proposed installations. Install electronic and presentation equipment. Program presentation systems and DSPs. Troubleshoot, analyze, and resolve recurring and intermittent problems with the campus CATV system. Install and remove CATV drops. Under general supervision, maintain two-way radio systems, repair two-way radios.
Provide customer service, from working with the customer to determine their needs, to setting a scope and expectations, to providing estimates. Supervise the installation of AV and sound equipment in various venues on campus. For some high-profile university events, this may include sound reinforcement and the operation of AV equipment or inspection of the work of contractors. As required: operate video cameras for streaming and recording. Use Adobe software for video and audio post-production. Provide sound reinforcement and operate AV equipment for events, including high-profile university-wide events.
Provide potential customers with technical assistance, support, advice, and orientation on media and other electronic equipment operation. Design and integrate multi-media equipment and electronic systems for presentation and event use in diverse settings. Troubleshoot, analyze, and resolve recurring and intermittent problems by using hardware, schematics, and diagnosis software. Lead the work of other media support technicians. Relay instructions, schedule and assign work in the absence of the supervisor. Provide crew members with technical assistance, support, advice, and orientation as required. Assist with day-to-day scheduling; instruct shop technicians as they install, repair and operate sound and A/V equipment. Perform on-site inspections of finished work. Work with supervisor to develop job specifications and estimates. Report project status to supervisor. Lead work as required.
Driving university owned vehicles to job sites will be required for this position.
Maintain acceptable driver rating as established in Policy UTS157 Section 2.5.4. Other functions as assigned.
Experience / Skills
High school graduation or GED. Minimum of one year of demonstrated leadership experience with AV technicians while also performing the same duties as other journey-level AV staff. Minimum of one year of audiovisual equipment technical operation and maintenance. More than 1 year of audiovisual experience with large events. High degree of demonstrated customer service and hospitality skills. This always includes a heightened sense of customer focus to include the AV team as well as internal and external clients. Experience troubleshooting and maintaining at least two classes of the following equipment: audio, video, projection, recording, radio or CATV systems. Experience with a variety of brands of equipment. Strong knowledge of and experience working with audiovisual equipment and software. Thorough knowledge of audiovisual equipment, set-up and operation basic skills in the fields of audio, video and lighting including, but not limited to, mixing equipment, lighting tools, cameras, microphones, projectors and video recorders, amplifiers and radios. Flexibility to accommodate a changing work schedule and/or business need. Ability to coordinate with other functions and units.
Interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills. Ability to work multiple projects simultaneously. Demonstrated ability to successfully meet deadlines.
Current Class "C" Operator Driver License required. Prior to date of hire, applicant selected must provide a Motor Vehicle Report (MVR) showing a driving history going back 36 months. This includes all states resided in for the past 36 months. MVR will be evaluated to determine eligibility to drive a university owned vehicle. If not currently a Texas resident, must obtain a Texas Driver License within 30 days after entering Texas as a new resident.
Equivalent combination of relevant education and experience may be substituted as appropriate.
At least five years’ experience in the operation and maintenance of audio-visual equipment. At least two years of demonstrated leadership experience with AV technicians while also performing the same duties as other journey-level AV staff. Experience with Crestron and Extron control systems. More than one-year experience in troubleshooting, repair and installation of Audio/Visual equipment. Knowledge of computer and peripherals operation, installation and troubleshooting. Experience installing audio control rooms and equipment. Successful completion of a technical course in electronics or audio theory. One year of experience in similar assignments at UT Austin. Experience in two-way radio repair.
