In this interview, Moe Shore, Director of Advanced Imaging at AbelCine, discusses the new Phantom Flex4K from Vision Research and the unique aspects of the camera.Q: Phantom cameras are known for their outstanding image quality and breathtaking slow motion imagery. What are the standout features that make the Phantom Flex4K unique?A:
The most obvious distinguishing feature of the new Phantom is that it captures high-speed at true 4K resolution. The images contain a level of detail that is readily apparent even when seen in HD. By oversampling, you can simply see more, no matter how you are viewing the output. This was clear to us on the first shots created with the camera in April 2013. Another exciting performance characteristic is how little noise there is in the image. Some of the early beta testers are saying that the Flex4K is among the cleanest, quietest digital cinema cameras they have seen. So, image quality and, of course, high-speed up to 1,000 fps in 4K make for a very compelling advance in the art of cinematography.
There is also a new choice of recording RAW or compressed. The compressed option will mean smaller files and longer record times, which will be very attractive for expanded use in television and web delivery.
Q: Are there other new accessories available with the Flex4K?
A: Vision Research has developed a new OLED viewfinder, which has 1080p resolution. It has very good dynamic range and will make viewing and focusing easier than ever. AbelCine manufactures a new, stronger riser plate. We’ve also designed a significantly updated remote control unit, the PCU2, which is smaller and lighter and capable of wireless operation.
