2017 Video Trends: 4K and Beyond

2017 is fast approaching and professional videographers and agencies are once again evaluating their technology needs. As 4K resolution becomes increasingly widespread, the question for many has become: Is it time to look beyond 4K?

4K Benefits and Limitations

4K video, also called Ultra HD, boasts 3,840-by-2,160-pixel resolution for televisions, or four times that of 1080p. Perhaps even more importantly, it also offers enhanced colors and High Dynamic Range. While certainly wonderful from a technological standpoint, the added pixel detail 4k offers is unable to be resolved by the human eye, except on very large projection screens while sitting close to the screen. For smaller screens, 1080p already delivers rich images with no visible pixel structure.

4 Ways to Build a Studio: How to Make it in the Entertainment Capital of the World

A warehouse is just a warehouse

You can’t just call a large, open building a studio. Having enough room to shoot properly is just the beginning. If you really want to do it right, you have to be ready to invest in heating and cooling, overhead and floor lighting, and soundproofing, for starters. If clients have to redo a take because they hear an ambulance in the background, they’ll be taking their business elsewhere next time. You also need creature comforts so you can accommodate not just the shoots, but the people, too. Clients want to go to a facility that feels good—with nice dressing rooms, kitchen areas, restrooms, etc. Fresh-baked cookies (a Levy Production Group signature), goodie baskets, meals, snacks, candies, sodas, and gourmet coffees and teas go a long way toward making people comfortable and earning repeat business.

How 4K, 6K, & 8K Affect the TV Industry

Technology is always evolving. In the television industry we’ve moved from standard definition to high definition and now onto, the Ks. Is this a technology trend that is here to stay or is it ahead of it’s time causing the excitement to die out before the rest of the television technology world catches up?

In Review: Blackmagic Design Video Assist 4K 7" HDMI/6G-SDI Recording Monitor

For the price point and what it does, the Blackmagic Video Assist is a pretty sweet product. Solid on performance and on price the Blackmagic Design Video Assist would be a very good choice in field monitoring and recording. Easy to find recording on SD cards, good battery life, easy to navigate touch screen, and a great looking screen make this a must check out before I buy product. I would be remiss if I didn’t mention that there is some good competition in this space. But that being said, check it out. I think you will come away impressed. I did.
