Once Ryan hit 21, he started playing in bands, joining Sunset Strip favorites Calico in 1997. They played SXSW. They toured the East Coast. They toured Brazil. In 2000, he decided he wanted to get weird. So he started the outlandish prog-punk outfit Überband and kept that train chugging for 13 years. Between Überband and a slew of other bands, he's made numerous recordings, toured in four different countries, and played countless festivals and clubs.
In 2009, he got mixed up with theater folk and music directed Forbidden Zone: Live in the 6th Dimension, a stage adaption of the Richard and Danny Elfman cult classic film. This led to a career music directing and composing for the stage. He has worked primarily with the Sacred Fools Theater Company in Hollywood, but also provided music for, among other venues, the famed Pasadena Playhouse. In 2019, he premiered Deadly, an original musical about the crimes of H.H. Holmes that he co-wrote with playwright Vanessa Claire Stewart. In 2012, he won an Ovation Award for his work on the play Stoneface.
Recent years have seen Johnson writing new classical music. His work has been performed by the Orpheus Choir of Munich and the Voices of Change Ensemble in the US. Somewhere in the midst of this, he now scores and licenses his music for tv and film, plays regular gigs around Los Angeles, and music directs live events.
By the way, in his teen years, he was an actor and starred in Carnosaur 2. For some reason, this is still something people take note of. Nowadays, he just does voice over.
