‘My passion is to tell a story with captivating, visually compelling imagery, whether it be in 30 seconds or 120 minutes, color or black & white, film or digital. I am a dramatic cinematographer. I always look for the atmosphere, the action, the movement of the actors, or the expression on a character’s face – the heart of the scene.’
For over 25 years I have built a career as a consistent, cooperative and dedicated DP. My greatest assets are my keen observation, intuition and rock solid constitution. I have shot worldwide in all media formats, on Commercials, Music Videos, Documentaries and Features.
I am a graduate of the National Australian Film Television & Radio School with a Masters Degree in Cinematography, I have been awarded National and International Achievements, including five Golden Tripods at the National ACS Awards for his Commercial, Drama, Music Video and Documentary work.
A documentary series, "Beyond The Fatal Shore", I lensed on HD across Australia for the BBC, earned a British Academy Award Nomination for Best Cinematography in 2002.
In 2005, I was the 2nd Unit Director of Photography on the Dreamworks Picture, 'Memoirs Of A Geisha' produced by Steven Spielberg and directed by Rob Marshall.
'Memoirs of a Geisha' won the Oscar for Best Cinematography at the 2006 Academy Awards.
In a testimonial, Rob Marshall states:
'I am writing in behalf of the very special and talented Sion Michel. I know Sion from his work on 'Memoirs Of A Geisha' on which he served as 2nd Unit Director of Photography. In addition to being a truly great collaborator whose work is always precise and artful, he is one of the nicest people I know. I consider him one of the best eyes in the business and I would highly recommend him.'
In July 2007, I was nominated for an Emmy Award for my work on the NBC special: 'Tony Bennett: An American Classic', directed by Rob Marshall, in the category of: Outstanding Technical Direction, Camerawork, Video For A Miniseries, Movie Or A Special.
In 2009, I was nominated for Best Cinematography for the feature, ‘Like A Dream’ at the Golden Horse awards in Taipei.
In 2010, I lensed ‘Hot Summer Days’, which premiered on Chinese New Year and became the number one film in China upon its release.
In 2018 , I lensed ‘Sons of the Neon Night’ in Hong Kong. It is a 50m US Budget Crime thriller directed by Juno Mak. It is currently in Post and will are released in 2020.
