Currently New York Theatre Labs is offering a three-term course of study for the beginning actor:
Term 1 is designed for beginners who are serious about their craft. It will cover the basics of stagecraft along with scene study. Students will work on two assigned monologues and focus on building a solid foundation: how to "listen" and be in the moment, how to move on stage, how to speak, embracing the fourth wall, etc. Classes will be kept to a maximum of 10, guaranteeing students individualized attention. Acceptance into this class requires an interview to evaluate the student’s commitment and professional demeanor.
Term 2 will consist of more in-depth work on multiple scenes – e.g., a scene from the beginning of a play and a scene from the end – enabling students to work on character progression within a play as well as sharpening their stage skills. Scene work will involve multiple partners. At the conclusion of Term 2, professionals from the acting community – teachers, directors, casting directors, playwrights – will be invited to provide feedback to the students. Acceptance into Term 2 will be by successful completion of Term 1 or by audition.
Term 3 will be production-oriented – working on a play from first reading to a staged performance- oriented reading with blocking, as a troupe. Students will be able to invite guests to the staged reading. These readings will take place in a theatre and will involve the process of a dress-tech rehearsal prior to opening night. The dress rehearsal and reading will be in addition to the 12 sessions. Acceptance into Term 3 will be by successful completion of Terms 1 and 2 or by audition.
Terms 1 and 2 will run two nights a week for four weeks; classes will be 3 hours each for a total of eight sessions (24 hours).
Term 3 will run two nights a week for six weeks; classes will be 3 hours each for a total of 12 sessions (36 hours). The dress rehearsal and reading will be in addition to the 12 sessions.
Fees: 450.00 per term for Terms 1 & 2, $650 for Term 3.
Each term is payable in full prior to the first class. Students wishing to pay for all three terms in advance will receive a $200 reduction from the total fee. Any refunds for students dropping a course will be solely at the discretion of NYTL.
