About Me

Cheryl Kanekar is a comedy screenwriter and director.

Her sketch comedy TV pilot "Rather Sketchy" made the shortlist of BBC's Comedy Room. Her TV comedy pilot "Kraczinsky's Krash Kourses in Success" was a finalist in BBC's Comedy Room and a second rounder (top 10%) at the Austin Film Festival teleplay contest. Feature screenplay "24-Hour Support" placed in the second round (top 10%) at the Academy Nicholl Fellowship. Her "Louie" TV spec script was selected for the Nickelodeon Writing Program Script Review, while her original TV comedy script "Ping-Pong" was selected for BreakThrough Readings.

Her short films (A Pyramid of Women, Algorithms, Spinning Wheels, etc) have played in film festivals across the globe, including the Palm Springs International Festival of Short Films, Festival International du Film Independant, Reelworld, Raindance East, San Diego Asian Film Festival and others, on PBS and other TV channels, and in distribution by Cinema Guild.

She received the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences (Emmys) scholarship for TV production, Outstanding Documentary Award from San Diego State University for her documentary "A Pyramid of Women", The Badami Scholarship for Filmmakers 2004, and festival awards for several other films.

She has an M.A. in TV & Film from San Diego State University and an M.A. in English Literature from Bombay University..

She has also written, directed and/or edited PSAs (March of Dimes, CA Disaster Mental Health Coalition, Media Arts Center San Diego, etc), TV ads (San Diego Latino Film Festival) and documentaries (A Pyramid of Women, Banana Republic, It'd Never Happen to Me, Comics Are Everywhere, etc).

I have been in the industry since 1994.
