Film/TV/Theatre Composer
Richard deCosta learned to read and write both music and computer software at the age of 10. Then, over the next decade he immersed himself in an intense self-directed study using any music theory and composition books he could get his hands on, and the scores and recordings of composers like Wagner, Stravinsky, Bartok, Berg, and Ravel. Starting in the mid-90's Richard became heavily involved in electronic music, and built a studio which allows him to write electronic music as well as orchestral and very often music that combines the two in the same piece. Unlike most composers, Richard's primary instrument is drums and orchestral and world percussion. This unique perspective comes through in his compositions, which are very often highly charged rhythmically.
Since 1981, Richard has produced more than 500 compositions for orchestra, string quartet, solo piano, organ, chamber ensembles, and combinations of synthesizers and full orchestra, 15 solo albums of electronic music, and music for film, animation and video games. In the studio, he has produced and engineered more than 75 albums, performing drums on more than half of them.
Richard's most ambitious ongoing project is an innovative 3d animated space opera called "Kai, Death of Dreams". By "space opera" we mean just that, an opera in space; singing aliens and all.
