During spring break in 2011, she served as production manager (which included props master, craft services manager, assistant script supervisor and co-writer, social media coordinator, blog co-poster, fundraiser, canoe paddler, feelings soother, aspirin fetcher, and heavy lifter) on an independent film set.
In 2012, she co-edited and contributed to Feeding Kate: A Charity Anthology (as Neliza Drew).
Prior to teaching, she spent six years in advertising and electronic journalism as a writer, an editor, and a manager. She has run roller coasters, processed accounts payable, sold CDs and riverboat tickets, fixed copiers, set up databases, studied photography, typed legal documents, and entered workplace survey data from a sheriff's convention.
In addition to holding a Florida Professional Teaching Certificate for English 6-12 and Mathematics 6-12, Smith has degrees in criminology (M.S. from Florida Atlantic University) and business administration/marketing (B.S. from Nova Southeastern University).
In her spare time, she enjoys reading, writing, baking, and martial arts.
