Hi, my name is Robert. I am a freelance Scenic Designer and Technical Director. I have designed and built for theatrical productions, events, and films all around the Southern California area and Seattle. I have received multiple nominations for best set design at LA’s Ovation Awards, Los Angeles Stage Raw, and various others. Additionally, I spent the 2015-2016 school year at The Los Angeles High School of the Arts where I taught Scenic/lighting Design and Theatre Tech. I’ve also built other set pieces and large props such as a cryogenic freezer for a frozen Walt Disney, and a drum and bass guitar playing robot for the comedy band, Tartar Control.
I am a creative and innovative designer who brings imagination and practical solutions to every project. I love working with others to bring amazing environments to life from the ground up.
Set Design is great! I am very knowledgable in all areas of set design and construction whether it be for theatre, live events, or film and movies. I take ideas and concepts, illustrate them, and bring them from paper to real, live 3D spaces. That is what a set designer or any artist is; a person who works with a group to create an awesome idea, and brings it to life. That’s me!
I work with hand drawn concept art, Adobe Illustrator, Photoshop, Vectorworks and/or AutoCAD for most projects. From there I create a solid environment, prop, or set and devise the proper and most practical mechanical drawings and build plans for any project. I have exceptional skills in carpentry, rigging, scenic painting, and effects. Any project I work on is safe, practical, and conveys the ideas of any creative team I am a part of. Working with people with more experience or experience in different areas is great as I am always looking for better, and new ways to make really cool stuff.
While scenic design my strong suit, I am also a very competent Technical Director. I have extensive experience in lighting, sound, and overall theater maintenance. For eight years I acted at the in house Scenic Designer and Technical Director at the LA LGBT Center. I also spent the 2015-2016 school year as the Technical Director for the The Los Angeles High School of the Arts. There I taught students design and theater tech where we hung, focused, programed, and ran all of our own lights. We also mixed sound for many solo singers, full bands, speakers, and theatrical productions. At any given time I have been responsible for coordinating, staffing, scheduling, or budgeting set builds and strikes, light hang, focus, and programing, running sound for bands, etc. When it comes to running a theater I am well rounded and knowledgable.
I have been in the industry since 2008.
