Making great looking pictures isn't easy. It needs outstanding creativity, appropriate technology and process—and a passion for moving images. If you're reading this, you share that passion with us, and we think you'll appreciate what we have to offer.

Where we came from

Before FilmLight we gathered a great deal of know-how working in post-production, and we were making digital film sequences long ago. We met many like-minded people, and so we've been able to bring together an exceptional team—with many of the world's leading talents in software and hardware design for the post-production industry. We were the customer and we still think like the customer.

How it began

We started FilmLight because nobody was making the tools we knew would be essential to cutting edge post-production DI work in the future. We needed the technology so we decided to make it ourselves. The supreme image quality of the Northlight film scanner established our reputation, which grew rapidly with the immediate success of the Baselight colour grading system and Truelight colour management. Since then our focus on technical excellence, the user experience and delivering high-performance, dependable technology has seen us gain a reputation as a developer of the very best products in their sector.

Founded in 2002, FilmLight’s core business is centred on the innovation, implementation and support of its products in leading production companies, post-production facilities and film/TV studios around the world. Today our technology is still recognised as best in class and we have extended its reach with products such as FLIP, which takes our grading know-how on-set, and Baselight Editions for Avid, FCP and NUKE, which together form a seamless ‘colour pipeline’ between production and finishing. Our products are not islands—they work together at a file-based level and with the other products in the production – post workflow. That’s something our competitors cannot offer.

FilmLight is headquartered in London, where its research, design and manufacturing operations are centred. Drawing on our own experience in post-production facilities, we treat product support as a key marketing tool so sales and support are conducted through regional service centres and qualified partners worldwide. To this day we have never sent anyone out on a service call who has not actually built the device they are supporting and we know each and every one of our customers. By giving you peace of mind, you can concentrate on making beautiful pictures.

Today's values

In 2010, FilmLight's development team were honoured with four AMPAS Sci-Tech Awards spanning every one of our main product lines. In 2012, this major achievement was followed by an Academy of Television Arts & Sciences Primetime Emmy Award that recognised our innovative colour preview and dailies products—Truelight On-Set and Baselight TRANSFER—as significant innovations in TV technology.

We have also been recognised by the UK government with Queen's Awards for Enterprise in 2005, 2006 and 2012. But these are only a few of the accolades we have received since we started—click here for a full list of our awards.

We want to keep the values that have made our products such a resounding success, so we write stable, highly productive software that runs on the best PC components, and if we need more performance, we develop our own hardware. Where there is a choice to be made we do not compromise—we always engineer for quality and reliability.

We've come a long way since 2002. Our clients are all over the world and range from major film studios and national broadcast television providers, to production and post-production companies both large and small. Being a customer is still very fresh in our memory, so we try to stay personal and accessible and make our business easy to deal with. Based on the feedback from our customers, it works.

FilmLight's Peter Postma at the 2015 Band Pro Open House

An interview from the 2015 Band Pro Open House with Peter Postma of FilmLight. FilmLight develops unique colour grading systems, image processing applications and workflow tools that are transforming film and video post-production and setting new standards for quality, reliability and performance. Their streamlined metadata-based workflows employ robust products with the best creative tools, allowing creative professionals to work at the forefront of the digital media revolution ‘At Every Stage’ of modern workflows. In this interview we talk with Peter about FilmLight, their Post Production Tools, like Daylight and the FLIP Image Proccessor. Daylight is a powerful dailies platform for shot management and high-performance transcoding. It is designed as a compact yet powerful grading decision tool to help DoPs and directors establish looks and visualise what they have shot, on set or on location, as well as meeting all of the sophisticated deliverables requirements—in one application. Daylight makes use of over 10 years of accumulated Baselight development to provide comprehensive support for all camera and deliverable formats—including audio and retiming capability. Support for sophisticated rescaling, filtering, masking and burn-in operations, alongside Truelight Colour Spaces for accurate colour transforms, means that all of your deliverable requirements can be met by one application. Carrying forward all your metadata from set, including the creative decisions you make using FLIP, means the same vision can be seen at all stages in the post-production pipeline. Look data and transform LUTs can be imported directly into Daylight, Baselight and Baselight Editions so you can work on your original raw camera footage with the same looks in VFX, editorial and the final grade. The ability to export standard ASC CDL lists and 3rd party formatted 3D LUTs enable you to integrate FLIP into any post-production workflow. All image processing in FLIP is performed at 32-bit floating point for the highest possible colour fidelity. This, integrated with the latest advances in Truelight Colour Space technology, makes FLIP ideally placed to deal with the latest High Dynamic Range workflows. Looks developed in the grading theatre during test-shoots can be imported into FLIP, previewed with live footage and then further refined on-set using simple, yet powerful, real-time grading tools. The looks which you create in FLIP are then exported back to the grading theatre and seamlessly combined with the original raw camera footage to reproduce the same looks for the final grade.
