An interview from the 2015 International Broadcasting Convention in Amsterdam with Jon Tatooles of Sound Devices. Sound Devices, LLC, designs both Sound Devices audio products and Video Devices video products. Sound Devices offers portable audio mixers, digital audio recorders and related equipment for feature film, episodic television, documentary, newsgathering, live-event, and acoustical test and measurement applications. Video Devices offers digital video recorders, monitors and related products, which address a range of video productions, including fast-paced studio applications, live sports and events, as well as mobile, TV, film and documentary productions. In this interview Jon talks with us about their newly announced CL-12 Audio Control Surface for the 688 Field Mixer and also showcases the latest firmware updates to the PIX-E5 4K Recorder/Field Monitor.
The optional CL-12 linear fader controller significantly expands the mixing capability of the 6-Series mixer/recorder line. The 688 Field Production Mixer is a portable audio powerhouse that incorporates multi-channel mixer, auto-mixer, recorder plus optional SL-6 integrated powering and wireless system. By consolidating these functions, cabling requirements are significantly decreased, de-cluttering the sound mixer’s bag, increasing reliability and improving ease of use. The CL-12 attaches directly to any 6-Series mixer via a single USB cable that provides both power and control, making transitions between cart-based setups and over-the-shoulder workflows quick and easy. With the CL-12, the 688 gains a 3-band parametric equalizer for each of its 12 inputs, shortcut access to SuperSlot™ wireless receiver data (when used with the SL-6), and MixAssist™ auto-mix monitoring. The CL-12 also includes ports for a USB keyboard connection for efficient metadata entry, remote control via 3rd-party applications (such as Ambient Beetle Bluetooth dongle, Timecode Systems' :wave metadata hub), and for powering an optional USB lamp.
The CL-12 comes in two models. The standard CL-12 is designed to be a sleek and durable mixing surface with robust black aluminum side panels. Tactile controls, including illuminated buttons and twelve easy-to-use manual faders, combine with LED metering to improve the whole mixing experience. In addition to offering everything the standard CL-12 does, the CL-12 Alaia also features incredibly smooth gliding Penny & Giles faders — the best in the industry. Gorgeous custom hardwood side panels also enhance the look of the CL-12 Alaia. Available in either Blonde Maple or Red Mahogany, the panels are handmade by Amish craftsmen specifically for Sound Devices, LLC. The CL-12 Alaia also comes with a pair of black aluminum side panels.
The PIX-E5 5-inch 4K Recording Monitor features a compact, die-cast metal housing and an LCD display protected by Gorilla Glass 2, making it the ideal choice for those looking for a monitor that can stand up to the rigors of the most extreme and demanding production environments. The 4K-compatible PIX-E5 is the first on-camera monitor to offer the full range of Apple ProRes codecs, including the highest quality Apple ProRes 4444 XQ, a 12-bit codec designed to preserve the detail in wide, dynamic range imagery captured by today’s high performance digital image sensors. Files are directly recorded to a removable mSATA drive.
Now included is a firmware update that allows 3D LUT support, including built-in monitoring LUTs for Sony, Canon, and Panasonic, and the ability to import and view custom LUTs in .cube format. Additionally they have added support for HDMI record triggers for Panasonic, Canon & Sony cameras.
