This story is about Liya Rubio's work at the Ethiopian Community in Seattle, a neighborhood cultural center in the heart of Rainier Beach. As a child growing up in rural Ethiopia, Liya lost her mother to AIDS and was left to care for her younger brother alone. Liya and her brother were adopted by a family in Port Townsend, Washington in the 1990s. Liya is now helping other immigrants adapt and thrive in unfamiliar surroundings.
