About

An interview from the 2018 National Association of Broadcasters Convention in Las Vegas with Nick Walsh of Production Bot. Production Bot is a platform of portable, powerful production computer systems for the broadcast, film, television, and experiential / live event industries. Built in a briefcase-size, all-in-one housing with industrial-strength mainboard, processor, memory, and graphics specifications, Production Bot is for designed for speed and power, and tailored for travel, specifically for live streaming producers, film editors, and GFX designers. In this interview Nick talks with us about the Switch 8 Portable Live Production Switcher.

Production Bot is a true workhorse that was created by a team of video production experts for video production experts. Built around a quad core processors, a powerful NVIDIA GPUs, and AJA SDI Inputs- the Production Bot is ready to report for duty. Although vMix Pro software comes standard on the Switch 8 (vMix 4K on Switch 4), the open platform of Production Bot allows you to use it however you desire.

The Switch 8 Portable Live Production Switcher from Production Bot provides eight video inputs to control up to eight live HD-SDI video sources simultaneously with imbedded audio. This video switcher can be used as a live production studio, mobile editing station, and a DIT station. The Switch 8 has a built-in 17.3" screen with a removable cover and a resolution of up to 4096 x 2160p. It has an internal storage of 500GB, a 1TB SSD removable hot swap bay storage, and three additional drive bays.

This system comes pre-installed with vMix live streaming software and supports custom graphics including overlays, chroma key, and transition effects. You can stream your output live to many streaming platforms such as Facebook, Periscope, and Twitch. While the Production Bot is ideal for a small footprint, the screen real estate can be expanded with vMix's Multiview options. A keyboard, mouse, and a soft travel case are included.

The Production Bot Switch 8 is equipped with an AJA capture card including eight HD-SDI inputs/outputs. You can group four inputs together to provide two 4K inputs. When using the card in 4K mode, standard 1080 and 720 resolutions are unavailable. With up to two SDI outputs, producers can send multiple high-resolution feeds. For example, a "dirty" version complete with overlays for broadcast, and a "clean" version for recording and reuse later. Alternatively, one output can be dedicated to connect a broadcast-grade preview monitor to supplement the Production Bot's built-in screen. The built-in display eliminates the need for external monitors but can still be expanded via DVI, HDMI, or DisplayPort for multiviewer and other application access using external monitors.

vMix Call simplifies adding remote guests to your live production. With a web browser and webcam, your guest can connect into your live show with HD video and high-quality audio from anywhere in the world. Send and receive multiple channels of broadcast quality low-latency video over a gigabit Ethernet network utilizing NDI with vMix.

Two channels of audio over balanced XLR/TRS are supported in addition to the 16 channels of embedded SDI. The included XLR outputs allow for a custom audio monitoring solution. If analog audio isn't available, the Production Bot Switch 8 can interface with USB audio inputs and outputs, as well as Dante (separate software required). Additionally, a 1TB SSD drive is pre-loaded in one of the four removable SSD hot swap bays that enable ISO recording of any input. When finished, unplug the drives to move your footage to another machine for post-production or archiving.
