An interview from the 2018 National Association of Broadcasters Convention in Las Vegas with Pamela Berry of Westcott Lighting. Westcott markets a complete line of light control accessories for professional image makers. Since Westcott entered the photography market 76 years ago, it has become a major innovator in devising light control products. With the company’s expansion into the film/video markets, this long-standing commitment to innovation has continued. Westcott offers a wide range of products designed for the lighting professional. In this interview Pamela talks with us about the new Solix continuous LED light source with an integrated rotatable speedring, the portable handheld Ice Light 2 LED and their Flex LED Mats offered in a variety of sizes with daylight or bi-color options.

The Westcott Solix is a professional, hassle-free light designed with an array of versatile features for on-the-go filmmakers and photographers. The Solix emits up to 2100 lux (at 1m) of 5600K daylight-balanced light with a high color accuracy rating of 96+ CRI (97+ TLCI) and a beam angle of about 120º.

The Solix incorporates an integrated rotatable speedring with 8 standard rod receptacles. It is compatible with a variety of modifiers, including Westcott’s line of Pro Softboxes, Signature Softboxes, Shallow Softboxes, Stripbanks, and 5’ Octabanks. This convenient mounting system allows traditional softboxes to be instantly rotated 360º.

Weighing only 3.3 pounds (1.5 kilograms), the Solix’s compact housing is extremely durable and heat resistant. The Solix features a removable barndoor system for precise light control and a frosted diffusion front that eliminates cross-shadows. These accessories conveniently mount to the Solix’s magnetic front for quick and easy modification.

The Westcott Ice Light 2 LED light is an enhanced version of its predecessor built on the wish lists of photographers in the field. As their first order of business, Westcott made the light 50% brighter while maintaining its 21.6 x 7.5" form factor and rendering color-accurate output with a very high CRI of 96. Ten-step dimming is accessed via the unit's handle which has a built-in digital display. The light also has a USB port and built-in Bluetooth technology for future wireless control. For videographers, Westcott has doubled their efforts to produce a truly flicker-free fixture.

A removable Lithium-ion battery is yet another Ice Light 2 refinement. A 2.5-hour charge gives you 60+ minutes of runtime with the convenience of being able to charge a backup battery outside of the fixture. You can also double your runtime by attaching an optional power pack battery extension. It uses the same charger as the Ice Light 2. Like Its predecessor, the Ice Light 2 is virtually heat-free. Hold it as close as you want to your subject; the closer you get the more Ice Light's wrap-around quality of light becomes evident. Since it's virtually heat-free you never have to worry about injuring the talent or damaging the set.

While the ergonomic shape easily lends itself to handheld operation, the Ice Light 2 has a 1/4"-20 tap at each end of it for mounting it to a light stand or other accessory. The Ice Light 2 comes with gel clips, a tungsten-balanced gel filter, 2-way connector, a battery, 100-240 VAC power supply/charger, car charger, cord storage bag and a carry case with shoulder and belt straps.

The Westcott Flex™ is a pliable, dimmable, water-resistant LED mat for photography and video production that produces an outstanding quality of light with an impressively high 95+ CRI (Color Rendering Index) in both daylight and tungsten models. The fully bendable Westcott Flex features daylight or bi-colored LED diodes and outlined with a moldable 1/4” black frame. Its compact design allows it to be easily concealed onset or location and allows for nearly effortless travel. The Westcott Flex LED mat will be available in both tungsten and daylight versions. Although extremely compact in size, the output from the new LED is anything but small. The tungsten version offers an impressive 1,600 lux output at 1 meter with a 98 CRI, while the daylightbalanced model offers a slightly brighter 1,900 lux output at 1 meter with a 95 CRI. Each unit will include a dimmer to adjust the light output from 5% to 100% for precise control.
