An interview from the 2018 Cine Gear Expo at Paramount Studios in Los Angeles with Danny Hallet of The Tiffen Company. Tiffen is a leading manufacturer of imaging accessories for the consumer/professional imaging and the motion picture and broadcast television industries, including: Tiffen optical photographic filters and lens accessories; Steadicam camera stabilizing systems; Lowel location lighting equipment; Domke camera bags and Zing camera covers; Dfx digital effects software; Listec teleprompters; Davis & Sanford tripods and support systems; and Stroboframe flash brackets.
Tiffen Filters are manufactured using ColorCore® technology, a closely guarded proprietary process that entails permanently laminating the filter material in between two pieces of optical glass that are ground flat to tolerances of a ten-thousandth of an inch, then mounting them in precision metal rings. The ColorCore process allows us to control the color and density of Tiffen Filters, and the characteristics of special effects filters with much greater accuracy than typical dyed-in-the-mass filters, which usually exhibit color and density .
The Tiffen Company is proud to announce the NATural Neutral Density premium glass filters are now available in select ring sizes. Exemplifying game changing improvements to the current capabilities of neutral density filtration, the NATural ND’s provide unsurpassed neutrality in the visual and IR spectrum, resulting in true color fidelity and ultimate image quality. Named in honor of the groundbreaking achievements made by Tiffen’s founder, Nat Tiffen, the Tiffen NATural Neutral Density Filter Line uses Tiffen’s ColorCore® Technology, ensuring that effect will not scratch. Made with photographers in mind, the NATural Neutral Density Filter rings are ideal for landscape, portrait, wild life, and more.
Representing a breakthrough in ND and IRND filtration, the NATural Neutral Density filter line allows complete control of light for the perfect exposure, as well as superior performance in the visual and IR spectrum. These technological advancements make the NATural’s the ideal choice for cinematic and photographic production.
The Tiffen Series 9 Split-Field 2 Filter consists of a close-up lens cut in half. Half of the filter is a close-up lens while the other half is open. It is available in magnifications ranging from +.5 through +3. A macro shot of a rose with an old woman in the background? A close-up of a rock with a mountain range in the background? Tiffen Split-field filters give you the freedom to achieve these kinds of effects.
With this filter, one-half of the photo receives a close-up effect while the other half is normal. In this way, it is possible to have both very close and far subjects in focus at the same time. Or, one-half of the picture can be out of focus for special effects. Commonly used for floral and landscape photography where sharpness near and far is important.
