About

An interview from the 2018 International Broadcasting Convention in Amsterdam with Snehal Patel of ZEISS Lenses. Carl Zeiss is one of the oldest existing optics manufacturers in the world and is world renowned for their optical quality. Cinematography lenses from Zeiss have helped to create distinctive images in many famous movies and Camera lenses from Zeiss are used by millions of photographers around the globe. In this interview Snehal unveils their highly anticipated Cinema Lens Family, the ZEISS Supreme Primes at IBC for the first time, as well as their lineup of CP.3 Compact Primes, CZ.2 Compact Zooms and LWZ.3 Lightweight Zoom.

The ZEISS Supreme Prime family consists of 13 lenses with fixed focal lengths between 15 and 200 millimeters, the majority with a maximum aperture of T1.5. The ZEISS Supreme Primes are designed to cover cinematic large format camera sensors and are compatible with all of the latest camera models, such as the Sony Venice, ARRI Alexa LF, and RED Monstro. The lenses are extremely flexible and can be used equally well for science fiction thrillers as well as for dramas due to the gentle sharpness, the aesthetic focus fall-off and elegant bokeh.

The ZEISS Supreme Primes are equipped with the ZEISS eXtended Data metadata technology. Introduced in 2017, ZEISS eXtended Data provides frame by frame data on lens vignetting and distortion in addition to the standard lens metadata provided using Cooke's /i technology1 protocol. This greatly speeds up the entire film production’s workflow. When using visual effects for example, with only a few clicks, the lens properties can be removed so that computer-generated effects imagery can be accurately applied to the captured imagery. The lens properties can then be reapplied with the same click of a button and combined with the film material to create a realistic image. The first ZEISS Supreme Primes lenses with focal lengths of 25, 29, 35, 50, and 85 millimeters are available now.

The ZEISS CP.3 family is the latest contribution from ZEISS to support creative and progressive filmmaking with an affordable, future-proof and premium quality lens set. The ZEISS CP.3 lenses offer the perfect combination of high image quality and reliable usability. They exhibit the clean, crisp characteristics ZEISS is known for, together with an interchangeable mount system and full-frame coverage. The ZEISS CP.3 XD version features innovative and ground-breaking lens data technology to speed-up and simplify the workflow on set and in post-production.

Ranging from 15 mm to 135 mm, the ten focal lengths available in the ZEISS Compact Prime CP.3 or CP.3 XD series cover all applications from wide-angle to telephoto. The ZEISS CP.3 lenses feature advanced lens coatings, painted lens rims and special light traps within the barrel to eliminate unwelcome veiling glare and flares. The result is higher contrast, richer blacks and more saturated colors. The standardized positioning of the focus rings and a consistent 95 mm front diameter allows for fast and easy changeover while on set. Consistent T-stops simplifies lighting on set and exposure compensations (T2.9 for 15 to 21 mm and T2.1 for 25 to 135 mm). Currently the 10 focal lengths that are available are, the 15mm, 18mm, 21mm, 25mm, 28mm, 35mm, 50mm, 85mm, 100mm, 135mm.

The ZEISS CZ.2 Cinema Zoom lenses deliver great flexibility thanks to interchangeable mounts, allowing them to be used with a wide range of cameras from multiple manufacturers. Featuring Full-frame coverage (36 x 24 mm) for focal lengths of 15 to 200 mm, a common aperture of T2.9 through the range, nearly 300 degree focus rotation with no visible focus shift while change of focal length.

The ZEISS LWZ.3 Zoom Lens is a robust and reliable featherweight in its class but nevertheless supporting you with superior performance at the same time. Whether you are shooting a short film, a soap opera, a feature film or a run-and-gun documentary - even in the most difficult conditions, the ZEISS LWZ.3 zoom lens is a trustworthy and powerful companion. Additionally shown is the new Chrosziel low-profile integrated zoom control designed for Zeiss LWZ.3 zoom lenses and Sony FS-5 and FS-7 cameras. When secured and wired properly, the servo will control the LWZ.3 lens's zoom using the rocker on the camera's handgrip, ENG-style. This conveniently allows the operator to control focus and zoom simultaneously in run-and-gun situations.
